Former Polish Justice Minister Granted Asylum in Hungary Amid Legal Troubles

Former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro announced Monday that he has been granted asylum in Hungary, as he faces prosecution in Poland over allegations of power abuse during his tenure.

Ziobro served as a key figure in the nationalist conservative Law and Justice party government that ruled Poland from 2015 to 2023. During that period, the administration implemented controversial judicial reforms that critics say undermined the independence of Poland’s courts by appointing politically aligned judges and disciplining those who opposed government policies.

In a lengthy statement posted on social media platform X, Ziobro declared he had “decided to accept the asylum granted to me by the government of Hungary due to the political persecution in Poland.” He vowed to remain abroad until he believes the rule of law has been properly restored in his homeland.

“I believe that instead of acquiescing to being silenced and subjected to a torrent of lies — which I would have no opportunity to refute — I can do more by fighting the mounting lawlessness in Poland,” Ziobro wrote.

The former minister’s legal troubles stem from allegations by Poland’s current government that he misappropriated funds intended for victims of violence. Prosecutors allege these funds were diverted for other purposes, including the purchase of controversial Israeli-made Pegasus surveillance software.

In October, prosecutors formally requested the lifting of Ziobro’s parliamentary immunity to proceed with criminal charges against him. The current administration, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, has accused the previous Law and Justice government of using Pegasus to illegally monitor political opponents—a charge Ziobro has consistently denied, insisting his actions were lawful.

Tusk, who returned to power in late 2023 after winning elections on promises to restore judicial independence and democratic norms, responded to the news with apparent sarcasm. In an English-language post on X, he wrote: “The former Minister of Justice(!), Mr. Ziobro, who was the mastermind of the political corruption system, has asked the government of Victor Orbán for political asylum. A logical choice.”

The asylum grant highlights the deepening political alliance between Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Poland’s former ruling party. Hungary has reportedly provided refuge to several Polish politicians aligned with Law and Justice who are facing legal scrutiny at home.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó acknowledged on Monday that Hungarian authorities have granted asylum to “several” individuals who would face what Hungary considers political persecution in Poland, though he declined to identify them by name.

The situation underscores the ongoing struggle over judicial reform in Poland. Despite winning elections on a platform of reversing the controversial judicial changes implemented under Law and Justice, Tusk’s government has faced significant obstacles in its reform efforts. Two successive Polish presidents aligned with the nationalist right have blocked attempts to undo the previous administration’s judicial overhaul.

This development marks another chapter in the complex political relationship between Poland and Hungary, two European Union member states whose governments have often found themselves at odds with EU institutions over rule of law concerns. While Hungary under Orbán continues to maintain its nationalist stance, Poland’s political direction shifted with Tusk’s election victory, creating new tensions between the formerly aligned neighbors.

Analysts note that this high-profile asylum case could further complicate diplomatic relations between Warsaw and Budapest, while potentially impacting both countries’ standing within European institutions.
