Colombian forensic experts are working diligently to identify the remains of 69 security personnel killed in a military transport plane crash in the southwestern region of the country, while investigators search for answers about what caused the deadly accident.

The Hercules C-130 aircraft crashed Monday in Putumayo province shortly after takeoff, leaving families like Alfridis Julio’s in agonizing uncertainty. Julio’s 19-year-old son, Kaleth Julio Severiche, a soldier traveling home on leave to reunite with his family, was among those listed as deceased.

“My head is spinning. I don’t know what to do but wait,” Julio told The Associated Press while standing outside Bogota’s forensic institute, where the remains of all victims have been transported for identification.

The aircraft departed from the airport in Puerto Leguízamo at 9:40 a.m. local time on Monday but crashed just one minute later, approximately 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) from the runway, according to the Colombian Aerospace Force. Local residents were first to arrive at the crash site, with some capturing footage showing a dark cloud of smoke and flames engulfing the area.

In a display of civilian cooperation during the emergency, local residents helped transport injured survivors to medical centers using motorcycles, providing critical assistance in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

The Colombian Defense Ministry confirmed Tuesday that the crash claimed the lives of 67 members of the armed forces and two police officers. Initial reports had provided conflicting information about the casualty count and the total number of personnel aboard the aircraft.

The Hercules C-130 involved in the accident, bearing tail number FAC 1016, was part of a U.S. military aid package to Colombia. The aircraft was donated in 2020 under a bilateral cooperation agreement that included the transfer of two additional used Hercules planes to bolster Colombia’s military transport capabilities.

Aircraft maintenance records show the plane underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 2023, during which engineers inspected its engines and replaced key components. This routine but thorough maintenance procedure raises questions about what might have caused the fatal crash despite the recent safety inspections.

The Colombian Air Force has launched an investigation into the incident, though officials have not provided a timeline for when results might be expected. Investigators will focus on analyzing data from the aircraft’s two onboard recorders, which captured critical flight information including altitude, speed, and cockpit voice recordings.

This crash represents one of the deadliest aviation incidents for Colombia’s military in recent years. The C-130 Hercules has long been considered a workhorse of military aviation around the world, valued for its reliability in transporting troops and equipment to remote locations—particularly crucial in Colombia’s diverse and challenging terrain.

The incident highlights the risks faced by military personnel even during routine transportation operations. For Colombia’s armed forces, which have been engaged in various security operations across the country’s difficult geography for decades, air transport remains essential despite the inherent dangers.

The U.S.-Colombia military relationship, which facilitated the aircraft transfer, represents one of Washington’s strongest security partnerships in Latin America. The two countries have maintained close defense cooperation as Colombia continues to address internal security challenges, including drug trafficking and armed groups operating in remote regions like Putumayo, where the crash occurred.

As the identification process continues and the investigation progresses, families of the victims face the painful wait for confirmation and answers about what went wrong in the final moments of flight FAC 1016.
