A man wielding a knife attacked workers at a Yokohama Rubber Co. tire factory in central Japan on Friday, stabbing eight people and injuring seven others with what authorities believe was bleach, according to officials.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene in Mishima, Shizuoka prefecture, about 100 kilometers west of Tokyo, on charges of attempted murder, local police confirmed. Five of the stabbing victims are reported to be in serious condition, according to the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department.

First responders rushed to the facility mid-day after reports of the attack spread. Emergency personnel transported all fifteen injured workers to nearby hospitals for treatment, with authorities establishing a security perimeter around the manufacturing plant.

The Asahi newspaper, one of Japan’s leading publications, reported that the attacker was wearing what appeared to be a gas mask during the assault and was armed with a survival knife. This detail suggests a level of premeditation, though police have not yet released information regarding a possible motive.

“We’re still in the early stages of the investigation,” a police spokesperson said. “Our priority is ensuring the safety of everyone at the facility and providing support to the victims and their families.”

Yokohama Rubber Co., one of Japan’s largest tire manufacturers with operations in multiple countries, has temporarily suspended production at the Mishima facility. The company issued a brief statement expressing concern for its employees and pledging full cooperation with authorities.

“The safety and wellbeing of our employees is our highest priority,” the statement read. “We are working closely with local authorities and medical professionals to ensure that all affected individuals receive proper care.”

The attack has sent shockwaves through Japan’s manufacturing sector, which has historically maintained strong safety records for workers. Industry analysts note that Japanese factories generally implement rigorous security measures, making violent incidents relatively uncommon.

This assault comes as part of a troubling pattern of knife attacks in Japan, a country known for its low violent crime rates and strict gun control laws. In recent years, the nation has experienced several high-profile knife assaults that have prompted discussions about workplace security and mental health resources.

In 2019, a man attacked a group of schoolchildren waiting for a bus in Kawasaki, killing two and injuring more than a dozen others. In 2016, a former employee at a facility for the disabled killed 19 people and injured 26 in what became known as the Sagamihara stabbings.

Japan’s workplace safety regulations typically focus on preventing industrial accidents rather than deliberate attacks. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare may review current protocols following this incident, according to industry experts.

Local residents expressed shock at the violence occurring in their community, which is better known for its picturesque views of Mount Fuji than for violent crime.

“Nothing like this has ever happened here before,” said a shop owner near the factory who declined to be named. “This area is usually so peaceful.”

Shizuoka Governor Heita Kawakatsu offered condolences to the victims and their families while promising a thorough investigation. “We will work with local authorities to understand how this happened and take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he stated.

Police have secured the crime scene and are interviewing witnesses. Authorities expect to release more information as the investigation progresses in the coming days.
