Azerbaijan-Iran Tensions Spark Disinformation Wave on Turkish Social Media

Tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran have fueled a surge of provocative and misleading content on Turkish social media platforms, prompting government officials to issue warnings about disinformation campaigns targeting the historically close relationship between Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Turkey’s Center for Countering Disinformation, which operates under the Presidential Directorate of Communications, released a statement Saturday addressing the inflammatory posts that have appeared amid Azerbaijan’s recent diplomatic crisis with Iran. The agency emphasized the “unshakable historical ties and shared values” between Turkey and Azerbaijan, noting that the two nations have “successfully overcome many challenges” throughout their history.

The statement highlighted that bilateral relations continue to thrive under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who frequently invoke the motto “One Nation, Two States” to describe their countries’ special relationship.

The disinformation center urged Turkish citizens to remain vigilant against “exaggerated rhetoric, disinformation and black propaganda” designed to undermine relations between the two Turkic nations. Officials recommended that the public rely on official statements from authorized government sources when evaluating claims about the two countries.

The social media storm intensified after Azerbaijan accused Iran of committing terrorism following a drone strike in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave last Thursday. Iran has denied responsibility for any attacks on Azerbaijani territory. Some inflammatory posts went as far as calling for Turkey to sever ties with Azerbaijan over the incident.

Turkey has maintained a neutral stance in the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, consistently calling for de-escalation and an end to hostilities. However, this position has not prevented the eruption of heated debates in Turkish social media circles.

The online discourse has revealed distinct camps within Turkey’s digital sphere. One faction urges Ankara to side with Iran against what they characterize as “imperialist ambitions” of the U.S. and Israel. This group has expressed frustration with Azerbaijan’s preparation for potential retaliation against Iran, as indicated by President Aliyev’s stern remarks following the Nakhchivan incident.

Conversely, another segment of Turkish social media users points to Iran’s controversial regional activities, particularly in Syria and Yemen, framing the tensions as part of what they describe as a “hidden Shiite-Sunni conflict.” This group opposes any Turkish support for Tehran.

Communications Directorate Chair Burhanettin Duran revealed Saturday that authorities had taken action against dozens of social media accounts spreading disinformation. According to Duran, 41 accounts were blocked and 75 posts were removed from major platforms including X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

Duran described the situation as “a massive disinformation campaign and online psychological warfare” in light of recent regional developments. He added that certain accounts were deliberately sharing unverified content designed to “stir panic and fear” among the Turkish public.

“Necessary steps against digital manipulation attempts targeting public order, social peace and national security have been taken,” Duran stated, noting that relevant government agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.

The escalating tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran come at a particularly sensitive time for the region, with the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict threatening to expand into a wider regional war. Turkey, which maintains diplomatic relations with Iran, Israel and Azerbaijan, finds itself navigating a complex geopolitical landscape while trying to prevent domestic discord fueled by online misinformation.
