In the aftermath of the Vondelkerk fire in Amsterdam, far-right conspiracy theories and misinformation are proliferating across social media platforms, according to a recent investigation conducted by the Justice for Prosperity Foundation.

The findings, reported by Dutch public broadcaster NOS, reveal a concerning pattern of false narratives that have gained significant traction online since the historic church suffered extensive damage. The disinformation campaign appears to be exploiting public anxiety and religious sensitivities to advance divisive political agendas.

Researchers identified multiple fabricated claims circulating widely on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Telegram. These include unfounded allegations that the fire was deliberately set by immigrant groups, despite no evidence supporting such theories. Other viral posts falsely claim that authorities are deliberately concealing the “true cause” of the fire to prevent social unrest.

“What we’re seeing is a coordinated effort to weaponize this tragic event,” explained Dr. Marieke van der Linden, lead researcher at the Justice for Prosperity Foundation. “These narratives are designed to exacerbate existing tensions and target vulnerable communities.”

The investigation found that accounts linked to known extremist groups were among the most active in spreading the disinformation. Several posts accumulated thousands of shares within hours of being published, significantly outperforming factual news coverage of the incident from mainstream media outlets.

Amsterdam officials have repeatedly urged the public to await the official investigation results before drawing conclusions about the fire’s cause. Fire department spokesperson Jan Vermeer emphasized that preliminary findings point to electrical issues in the church’s aging infrastructure rather than foul play.

“We understand people are upset about damage to this beloved landmark, but jumping to conclusions based on social media speculation is counterproductive and potentially harmful,” Vermeer stated at a press conference yesterday.

The Vondelkerk, a neo-Gothic Catholic church built in 1872 and located near Amsterdam’s famous Vondelpark, has been a protected monument since 1974. The fire, which broke out in the early morning hours, damaged approximately 40 percent of the structure, including the historic organ and several irreplaceable stained-glass windows.

Social media companies have faced mounting criticism for their slow response to the spread of the conspiracy theories. Despite their content moderation policies, many of the most inflammatory posts remained accessible for days before being flagged or removed.

Digital rights advocate Helena Kruger noted that this incident highlights ongoing challenges with platform accountability. “We continue to see social media companies prioritize engagement over truth, even when the consequences include potential community harm,” she said.

The phenomenon mirrors similar disinformation patterns observed following other significant events across Europe, including cathedral fires and attacks on religious sites. Experts warn that the rapid spread of such conspiracy theories can have real-world consequences by inflaming community tensions and potentially inspiring retaliatory actions.

Amsterdam Mayor Jakob Veldhuis has called for calm and unity in response to the incident. “This historic church belongs to all Amsterdammers regardless of background or belief. We must not let those seeking division exploit this unfortunate event,” he stated in a public address.

The Justice for Prosperity Foundation has recommended that media literacy campaigns be strengthened to help citizens better identify false information online. The organization has also urged closer collaboration between government agencies, social media platforms, and civil society organizations to develop more effective responses to coordinated disinformation campaigns.

As restoration plans for the Vondelkerk begin to take shape, community leaders are organizing interfaith gatherings aimed at countering division and focusing on the shared cultural heritage the building represents to the city.
