Georgian officials are seizing on Trump’s BBC lawsuit to bolster their own media criticism, claiming the broadcaster is part of a coordinated campaign against the country.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has cited U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent lawsuit against the BBC as evidence of what he describes as the broadcaster’s involvement in a “hybrid operation” targeting Georgia. Speaking to reporters, Papuashvili claimed the lawsuit validates Georgian authorities’ long-standing complaints about BBC coverage of the country.

“The BBC crafted a story before the elections aimed at undermining Donald Trump. Behind this are clear political motives and an alleged political directive—specifically, a political operation against the U.S. President,” Papuashvili told media representatives.

The Parliament Speaker argued that Trump’s legal action exposes what he characterized as the BBC’s willingness to manipulate information for political purposes. He suggested that the broadcaster functions as part of a coordinated propaganda system rather than an independent media organization committed to journalistic standards.

“Once again, the fairy tale about media standards collapses,” Papuashvili stated. “What we see is a propaganda machine controlled by a single conglomerate operating across multiple countries. This only reinforces and confirms our longstanding claims against the BBC.”

Georgian officials have frequently criticized international media coverage in recent years, particularly amid growing tensions with Western partners over democratic backsliding concerns. The ruling Georgian Dream party has faced mounting criticism from the European Union and the United States regarding legislation that opponents say mirrors Russian-style restrictions on civil society and press freedom.

Papuashvili indicated that Georgian authorities are now preparing their own legal action against the BBC. According to the Speaker, the Parliament’s legal team is developing documentation to file complaints with the UK media regulator Ofcom and is exploring additional legal avenues, potentially seeking representation in the United Kingdom.

“Our lawyers are actively working on this issue. We will use all available legal mechanisms to expose the BBC’s falsifications and pursue this matter through legal channels,” he said.

The Georgian official’s comments come as the country navigates increasingly complex relations with Western institutions. Georgia’s EU candidacy has been complicated by democratic concerns, while the ruling party has adopted increasingly critical rhetoric toward Western partners and media organizations.

Media analysts note that characterizing international news outlets as agents of foreign influence has become a common tactic in polarized political environments, particularly in countries where press freedom has come under pressure.

Trump’s lawsuit seeks $10 billion in damages from the BBC, alleging politically motivated reporting intended to influence U.S. public opinion ahead of elections. While the legal merits of Trump’s case remain to be determined, Georgian officials appear eager to link their grievances to the high-profile lawsuit.

The BBC has previously rejected Georgian officials’ accusations of bias and misinformation in their reporting on the country. Media freedom organizations have expressed concern about the Georgian government’s increasingly hostile stance toward independent journalists, both domestic and international.

As Georgia approaches critical parliamentary elections later this year, relations between the government and international media organizations are likely to remain tense, with officials continuing to challenge reporting they perceive as unfavorable to their interests.

The ongoing dispute highlights broader tensions between media accountability and political pressure, raising questions about how governments worldwide respond to critical coverage and the implications for press freedom in an increasingly polarized global information environment.
