Ukrainian National Guard servicewoman received a life sentence for high treason and supporting Russian aggression against Ukraine, according to a statement from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense of the Eastern Region.

The Kyiv District Court in Kharkiv convicted the woman after prosecutors presented evidence that she had collected and transmitted critical military intelligence to representatives of the Russian government while serving in the Ukrainian National Guard. The information included locations and movements of Ukrainian Armed Forces units, as well as data on military equipment positions.

The court found the defendant guilty of additional charges related to publicly justifying Russia’s temporary occupation of Ukrainian territory and armed aggression against the nation. The conviction was secured under Part 2 of Article 111 and Part 1 of Article 436-2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.

In addition to the life imprisonment sentence, the court ordered the confiscation of the servicewoman’s property, barred her from holding certain positions for three years, and stripped her of her military rank of “Senior Soldier.”

The case highlights Ukraine’s zero-tolerance approach toward treason during wartime, particularly among military personnel with access to sensitive information. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Ukrainian authorities have been vigilant in identifying potential collaborators within their ranks.

Military analysts note that intelligence gathered by embedded assets can be particularly damaging to defensive operations, potentially enabling more precise Russian strikes against Ukrainian military targets. The severity of the sentence reflects the potential harm such actions could cause to Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and the lives of its soldiers.

This conviction comes amid ongoing Russian attempts to gather battlefield intelligence through human sources rather than relying solely on satellite and electronic surveillance. Security experts suggest that Russian intelligence services have been actively recruiting assets within Ukrainian military and civilian structures since before the full-scale invasion.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has been conducting regular counter-intelligence operations throughout the country. In a separate case mentioned by prosecutors, the SBU detained a former supervisor from a machine-building plant in Donetsk region who was suspected of coordinating Russian airstrikes.

Ukraine’s domestic security operations have intensified as the war has progressed, with authorities working to identify potential security threats before they can provide actionable intelligence to Russian forces. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly warned citizens about the severe consequences of collaboration with occupying forces or providing assistance to Russia.

Legal experts point out that Ukraine’s wartime legislation has strengthened penalties for crimes against national security, particularly for military personnel who violate their oath. The life sentence in this case demonstrates the judicial system’s determination to punish acts considered to directly endanger the country’s defensive capabilities.

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that this case serves as a warning to others who might consider similar actions and underscores the importance of vigilance and coordination between law enforcement and intelligence agencies in protecting Ukraine’s national security during the ongoing conflict.
