Mayawati Launches “Bahujan Mission 2027,” Urges Party to Prepare for Uttar Pradesh Elections
Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has officially set her sights on reclaiming power in India’s most populous state, launching preparations for the 2027 assembly elections with a call for party members to counter what she described as “false propaganda” from rival parties.
Speaking at a state-level review meeting at BSP headquarters in Lucknow on Thursday, Mayawati pointed to the substantial turnout at the recent October 9 rally commemorating BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s death anniversary as evidence that the party’s core support base remains intact.
“The grand success of the rally proves that the Bahujan Samaj continues to stand firmly behind our mission, ideology, and leadership,” Mayawati told assembled party officials. The well-attended memorial event has injected fresh momentum into the BSP, which has struggled electorally in recent years after previously governing Uttar Pradesh four times under Mayawati’s leadership.
In her address, the BSP supremo emphasized the party’s founding principles, distinguishing it from competitors by highlighting its independence from corporate funding. “The BSP is not dependent on capitalists or industrialists but represents a movement dedicated to social transformation and economic emancipation,” she said. Mayawati stressed that BSP politics remains “as clean as an open book,” focusing on honest service to marginalized communities.
The party has formalized its election strategy under the banner “Bahujan Mission 2027,” which will include village-to-village outreach campaigns across Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts. Senior party leaders have received assignments to conduct public meetings in their respective regions, focusing on the BSP’s vision for improved law and order, social justice, and welfare programs.
Taking aim at the Samajwadi Party (SP), which previously governed the state, Mayawati accused it of displaying casteist bias by renaming institutions, districts, and universities that had been named after icons revered by the Bahujan Samaj – a term encompassing Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and religious minorities.
“Many welfare schemes designed for these communities were discontinued out of political malice and deceit,” Mayawati alleged, contrasting this with the BSP’s approach, which she described as free from “coercion, bribery, or discrimination.”
The BSP’s electoral revival effort comes at a critical time for the party, which has faced significant challenges since losing power in 2012. In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the party secured just one seat despite contesting all 403 constituencies. This dramatic decline from the 206 seats it won in 2007 has raised questions about the party’s future in a state where it once dominated Dalit politics.
Political analysts note that the BSP’s early election preparations reflect Mayawati’s recognition that rebuilding the party’s grassroots network will require sustained effort. The party has historically relied on a coalition of Dalit voters (particularly Jatavs, Mayawati’s own community) alongside Muslims and other disadvantaged groups.
During the meeting, Mayawati specifically instructed party workers to strengthen unity within the Bahujan community and counter what she termed “misleading propaganda” from opposition parties. “Every worker must take the party’s message to the grassroots,” she directed.
Party leaders present at the gathering reportedly pledged their commitment to implementing Mayawati’s directives “in letter and spirit,” expressing confidence in the BSP’s prospects for returning to power in 2027.
The BSP’s electoral strategy will unfold against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh’s complex political landscape, currently dominated by the BJP under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the Samajwadi Party serving as the principal opposition force.
