Karnataka BJP Confronts State Government Over Dharmasthala Case Handling

Karnataka’s BJP leadership has launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government over its handling of the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case, demanding accountability for what they describe as “malicious propaganda” against a revered Hindu pilgrimage site.

Speaking at a press conference at the BJP headquarters “Jagannath Bhavan” in Bengaluru on Saturday, State BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra criticized the government’s approach to the controversy, which has generated discussions at state, national, and international levels.

“The handling of the alleged Dharmasthala mass grave case and the alleged conspiracy to hurt Hindu sentiments has triggered widespread debate,” Vijayendra stated. “There has also been discussion on the mental harassment caused to devotees of the Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Temple due to malicious propaganda.”

Vijayendra particularly took issue with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) “overnight” in response to demands from what he termed “so-called urban Naxals.” He questioned the wisdom of making decisions that affect the sentiments of millions of devotees based on street-level protests.

“The BJP, through the ‘Dharmasthala Chalo’ movement, created awareness and brought the Karnataka government’s irresponsibility to the notice of the people,” he added.

The controversy surrounds allegations about mass burials in the Dharmasthala region, with claims of skeletal remains triggering concerns among devotees of the Sri Manjunatheshwara Temple. The case has become a political flashpoint in Karnataka, with the BJP accusing the Congress government of mishandling an issue sensitive to Hindu sentiments.

“Who will pay the price for the malicious propaganda?” Vijayendra demanded, noting that “Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who hurt Hindu sentiments, has not apologized till date. Instead, he has washed his hands off by claiming that whatever he did was right.”

The BJP leader further alleged that the “sinister forces behind the conspiracy” have not been exposed.

Expanding his critique beyond the Dharmasthala case, Vijayendra accused the Siddaramaiah government of pursuing “anti-Hindu” policies. He claimed the administration was preparing to allow police to grant bail at police stations for those involved in illegal cattle transportation, rather than requiring court appearances.

“Why such sympathy for them?” Vijayendra questioned, alleging that the state government had “stooped to an unforgivable low for minority appeasement.”

The BJP president also targeted the government’s approach to the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, which he characterized as an attempt to stifle criticism. Vijayendra claimed the legislation was introduced “to prevent the BJP, JD-S, private individuals, and the media from criticizing” the government.

“The Karnataka government was conspiring to send people to jail for nine to ten years for criticizing the hate speech bill on social media,” he alleged, calling it an “anti-democratic” move comparable to the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975.

“This is a symbol of intolerance and amounts to the murder of democracy,” Vijayendra concluded.

The political tensions highlighted in this confrontation reflect deeper divisions in Karnataka politics, where religious sensitivities and accusations of appeasement have become central to the discourse between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP. The Dharmasthala case has emerged as a symbolic battleground in this larger ideological contest, with both sides leveraging it to appeal to their respective constituencies.

As investigations continue, the case remains a volatile issue in Karnataka’s political landscape, with potential ramifications for Hindu-Muslim relations and the broader electoral dynamics in the state.
