Florida Legislature Approves Renaming Palm Beach International Airport After Trump
Florida lawmakers have passed legislation that would rename Palm Beach International Airport after former President Donald Trump, adding to a growing list of infrastructure bearing his name across the country. The bill, which cleared both chambers of the Florida Legislature, would officially designate the facility as “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
The legislation combines Senate Bill 706, sponsored by Republican National Committee Chairman and state Sen. Joe Gruters of Lakeland along with state Sen. Debbie Mayfield, with House Bill 919, introduced by state Rep. Meg Weinberger, whose district includes the airport. The House measure passed Friday, completing the legislative process.
The airport’s proximity to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach makes it a logical choice for supporters of the naming initiative. The bill also includes provisions for state funding to cover rebranding costs associated with the name change.
Before becoming official, the proposal still requires approval from both Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Federal Aviation Administration. A spokesperson for DeSantis indicated the governor has not yet received the bill but “will review it in its final form” once it arrives at his office.
The initiative joins several recent efforts to name infrastructure after the former president. In recent months, Trump’s name has been added to the Trump-Kennedy Center in Washington, as well as highways in Florida and Oklahoma. North Carolina Republican Representative Addison McDowell has even introduced legislation to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump, which would result in the nation’s capital being served by airports named after both Trump and Reagan.
The proposal has sparked significant debate among Florida politicians. Democratic critics have raised concerns about the estimated $5 million rebranding costs and questioned the appropriateness of naming the facility after a sitting president who may potentially return to office.
Representative Lois Frankel, a Democrat whose district includes the airport, expressed strong opposition to the measure. “It’s misguided and unfair that the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature ignored the voices of Palm Beach County by pushing forward a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport without giving county residents a real opportunity for input,” Frankel said in a statement.
She further argued that such naming decisions “should wait until after an honoree’s service has concluded” and should involve “meaningful input from the local residents and communities most directly affected.” Democrats have suggested any consideration should be postponed until at least 2029, after Trump’s potential second term would conclude.
The White House has already reacted to the news, with Communications Director Steven Cheung offering a brief comment that the name “has a great ring to it.”
The proposed renaming reflects broader cultural debates about public recognition of political figures and the timing of such honors. Traditionally, major infrastructure naming decisions have waited until after a public figure’s service or even their lifetime, though exceptions exist throughout American history.
The Palm Beach International Airport serves as a critical transportation hub for South Florida’s tourism and business sectors. Located just three miles west of downtown West Palm Beach, the airport handles over six million passengers annually and plays a vital role in the region’s economy.
If approved, the name change would join other prominent Florida airports with designated names, including Miami International Airport and Jacksonville International Airport, as specifically noted in the legislation’s text.
