Trump Appoints Republican Governor as Special Envoy to Greenland

President Trump has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland, underscoring the administration’s strategic interest in the Arctic region.

The announcement came via Trump’s Truth Social account, where he emphasized Greenland’s importance to American national security interests. “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World,” Trump stated.

Landry, who has served as Louisiana’s governor since early 2024, quickly responded to the appointment on social media platform X, clarifying that the role would not interfere with his gubernatorial duties. “It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana,” Landry wrote.

The appointment signals continued American interest in Greenland, which has become an increasingly important geopolitical focal point due to its strategic location and natural resources. The island, which falls under Danish sovereignty, has gained attention as climate change opens new shipping routes and access to valuable mineral deposits in the Arctic region.

Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen acknowledged the appointment but issued a measured response that emphasized territorial sovereignty. “The appointment confirms the continued American interest in Greenland. However, we insist that everyone – including the U.S. – must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen stated.

This diplomatic appointment follows previous indications of Trump’s interest in Greenland. In December 2024, he posted on Truth Social that “the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for U.S. national security interests. He later added in January 2025, “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation.”
