Swalwell Faces Sexual Misconduct Allegations Amid California Governor Race

California gubernatorial candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell is confronting serious backlash following multiple sexual misconduct allegations published Friday, with critics highlighting apparent hypocrisy based on his previous statements about believing women who make such claims.

Reports indicate Swalwell’s legal team sent cease-and-desist letters to accusers just one day before bombshell allegations were published by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle. The timing has drawn particular scrutiny given Swalwell’s past comments during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings in 2018.

“I saw continued demeaning of victims of sexual assault, people who deserve to be heard, people who deserve their allegations to be investigated,” Swalwell said during an MSNBC interview at that time. He had further suggested that if Kavanaugh was innocent, he should welcome questioning of all accusers to clear his name.

This apparent contradiction hasn’t gone unnoticed by legal experts. Jonathan Turley, Fox News contributor and Public Interest Law professor at George Washington University, posted on social media that Swalwell is “hoping that voters will apply a different standard than the one he applied to Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation.” Mike Davis, former chief counsel for nominations in the Senate Judiciary Committee, called Swalwell a “hypocritical predator” when resharing the congressman’s previous statements about Kavanaugh.

The allegations first gained traction when Cheyenne Hunt, a former Capitol Hill staffer and progressive media personality, began circulating testimonies from women claiming sexual assault by the congressman. These initial rumblings quickly evolved into formal reports from multiple credible news outlets.

One of the most serious accusations comes from an unnamed former staffer who worked for Swalwell for approximately two years. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, she claims Swalwell pursued her shortly after she was hired as a 21-year-old in his district office, despite being married. Her allegations include claims that Swalwell pressured her to send nude photographs, exposed himself to her while driving, requested sexual acts, and that these interactions affected her professional treatment.

The former staffer also detailed a more recent incident from April 2024 at a charity event where Swalwell was being honored. After reuniting and having drinks with him, she reported blacking out but remembers pushing him away and saying “no” as he allegedly attempted to force her to have sex with him in his hotel room. Text messages reviewed by the Chronicle reportedly showed her telling a friend she had been sexually assaulted by Swalwell, with other messages indicating she had “blacked out” but “woke up once during it and even told him to stop at one point.”

The allegations arrive at a critical time in California politics. Swalwell is currently leading a competitive field of candidates hoping to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. The race is considered crucial for the Democratic Party, which has maintained control of the governor’s mansion in the nation’s most populous state for years.

Following the widespread publicity of the allegations, prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have called for Swalwell to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. The pressure represents a significant challenge for a candidate who has enjoyed considerable support within the party and received endorsements from figures like Representative Adam Schiff.

Swalwell has categorically denied the sexual assault allegations in a video posted to social media, stating they are “flat false” and “did not happen.” While denying the more serious accusations, he acknowledged making “mistakes in judgment” in his past, which he characterized as matters “between me and my wife.”

His campaign spokesperson, Micah Beasley, earlier described the allegations as a “false, outrageous rumor” being spread by political opponents who have “teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race.”

With voting set to begin in less than a month, the allegations have dramatically altered the landscape of California’s gubernatorial contest, raising questions about Swalwell’s political future and whether he can maintain his candidacy amid growing calls for him to step aside.
