Former President Barack Obama has publicly endorsed Democrats’ redistricting efforts in Virginia that could potentially secure the party four additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The endorsement marks Obama’s continued involvement in the nationwide battle over congressional district boundaries ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack,” Obama wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday. “Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections. Now Virginia has a chance to help level the playing field.”

In his statement, Obama urged Virginia residents to vote in favor of the redistricting proposal, noting that early voting begins March 6, with Election Day scheduled for April 21.

This is not Obama’s first foray into redistricting battles this election cycle. The former president previously backed California Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting initiative late last year, characterizing it as a “responsible” response to similar Republican efforts in Texas.

The endorsements represent a notable shift for Obama, who has previously positioned himself as an opponent of partisan gerrymandering. In 2018, Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder launched “All On The Line,” an organization described as a “grassroots movement to fight gerrymandering and advocate for a fair redistricting process.”

During his final State of the Union address as president, Obama explicitly criticized gerrymandering, stating that the nation must “end the practice of drawing our congressional districts so that politicians can pick their voters, and not the other way around.”

Redistricting battles have intensified across the country in recent years, with both Democrats and Republicans seeking advantages through redrawn congressional maps. The process has significant implications for control of the House of Representatives, where narrow majorities have become the norm.

The Supreme Court has already been drawn into these disputes. Earlier this week, the Court’s conservative majority ruled in favor of Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis, halting a state court ruling that had ordered New York’s redistricting commission to redraw her district, which encompasses Staten Island and a portion of Brooklyn.

The lower court had determined that Malliotakis’s district was drawn in a way that diluted the voting power of Black and Hispanic constituents. However, the Supreme Court’s decision, made over the dissent of its three liberal justices, keeps the current district boundaries intact.

Following the ruling, Malliotakis released a statement saying, “Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to keep New York’s 11th Congressional District intact helps restore the public’s confidence in our judicial system and proves the challenge to our district lines was always meritless.” She accused the plaintiffs of attempting “to manipulate our state’s courts to use race as a weapon to rig our elections.”

The Virginia redistricting effort that Obama is now supporting comes as Democrats seek to regain their advantage in the closely divided House of Representatives. Political analysts note that the outcome of these redistricting battles could significantly impact the balance of power in Congress following the 2026 midterm elections.

Critics of the Virginia plan have characterized it as a “power grab” by Democrats, while supporters argue it creates fairer representation that better reflects the state’s demographic makeup and voting patterns.

As these redistricting conflicts continue to unfold across multiple states, both parties are mobilizing resources and legal expertise to maximize their potential seat counts, setting the stage for what could be a transformative election cycle in 2026.
