Former Vice President Kamala Harris Hints at 2028 Presidential Run

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly acknowledged she is considering another presidential run in 2028, making the revelation at what has become the first major gathering of potential Democratic contenders for the next election cycle.

“I might. I might. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted,” Harris told Rev. Al Sharpton when asked about her future presidential ambitions during the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention on Friday. Her remarks were met with enthusiastic chants of “run again” from the audience.

Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, ultimately lost that election to Donald Trump. Her appearance at the civil rights organization’s convention signals her continued interest in maintaining a high profile within the party.

The former vice president is not alone in signaling early presidential aspirations. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who emerged as a surprise contender in the 2020 Democratic primaries, also made appearances at the convention, fueling speculation about his own 2028 ambitions.

Political analysts note that the National Action Network’s annual gathering has become a crucial early stop for presidential hopefuls seeking to connect with influential Black leaders and activists who form a critical component of the Democratic base. The organization, founded by Sharpton, provides a platform for potential candidates to articulate their vision directly to this key constituency.

“We have a pretty good bench. In fact, you’ve invited so many of them to come right here, they’ve been on this stage, or they’re going to be,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker told Sharpton during the convention, acknowledging the parade of presidential prospects in attendance.

In addition to Harris and Buttigieg, the convention featured appearances by several prominent Democratic governors considered potential presidential contenders, including Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Pritzker of Illinois, and Wes Moore of Maryland. Rep. Ro Khanna of California also addressed the gathering, while Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona were scheduled to speak on Saturday.

Sharpton emphasized that he wants to evaluate potential candidates based on “what their vision is now, and what they’re doing now,” which explains the extensive roster of Democratic luminaries invited to the event.

The early positioning for the 2028 Democratic nomination reflects the increasingly lengthy presidential election cycle in American politics. Potential candidates have already been making visits to early voting states like New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and Iowa over the past year, laying groundwork for possible campaigns.

Black voters have historically played a decisive role in Democratic presidential politics. The 2020 election provided a stark reminder of this influence when Joe Biden, after disappointing showings in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, secured a commanding victory in the South Carolina primary thanks to strong support from Black voters. That win propelled Biden toward the Democratic nomination and eventually the presidency.

The Republican National Committee has already begun attacking the gathering of Democratic hopefuls. “Democrats are kicking off the 2028 primary by parading Kamala Harris and a roster of failed governors trying to outrun their own records,” RNC national press secretary Kiersten Pels told Fox News.

Political observers expect the 2028 Democratic primary field to be both crowded and competitive, with Harris potentially entering as a frontrunner given her previous experience as vice president and presidential nominee. However, with nearly four years until the next presidential election cycle begins in earnest, the political landscape could shift dramatically before candidates formally announce their intentions.
