The wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, R-Ind., has died from complications following a January hit-and-run accident, according to a statement released by the congressman’s office on Sunday. Danise Baird, who had been married to the congressman for 59 years, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash that occurred on January 5.

“Danise was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed,” the statement read, noting that the couple had built a life “centered on faith, family, and service.” The office requested prayers for the congressman and his family during this difficult time.

The accident occurred as the couple was returning to Washington, D.C. While Rep. Baird was discharged after less than 24 hours of hospitalization, his wife’s injuries were significantly more severe. According to a January 15 update from the couple’s son, Beau Baird, Danise had suffered “nearly 15 breaks and fractures” in what he described as a “serious hit-and-run accident.”

Despite initial optimism about her recovery – including a February 1 update that Danise had “taken her first assisted steps” – her condition ultimately deteriorated. Former President Donald Trump had commented shortly after the crash that both the congressman and his wife were expected “to be okay.”

The 80-year-old congressman has represented Indiana’s 4th Congressional District since 2019. The largely rural district encompasses western and north-central Indiana, with agriculture being a dominant industry in the region. Baird, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, has focused on veterans’ issues and agricultural policy during his time in Congress.

Following the announcement of Danise’s death, colleagues from across the political spectrum expressed their condolences. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., described the Bairds as “salt of the earth people,” noting that Danise was “often by his side as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents.” She added that “Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country.”

Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn., asked the public to join him in prayer for the Baird family, while Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., said she and her husband were praying for the family to “find comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.”

According to the congressman’s House biography, Jim and Danise Baird were high school sweethearts who went on to raise three children together. Their long marriage spanned nearly six decades, weathering the congressman’s military service in Vietnam and his subsequent political career.

The accident in January caused Rep. Baird to miss some time in Congress as he recovered from his own injuries. Details about the hit-and-run driver have not been widely reported, and it remains unclear if any arrests have been made in connection with the accident.

Rep. Baird’s office has not yet announced funeral arrangements or memorial services for Danise. The congressman is expected to continue representing his district while mourning this significant personal loss.

The tragedy has highlighted the close-knit nature of the congressional community, with representatives from both sides of the aisle expressing sympathy and support for their colleague during this time of grief.
