Federal authorities have expanded their investigation into the 2020 presidential election to include Arizona, marking the second known jurisdiction targeted by the Department of Justice in its ongoing probe.

Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen disclosed Monday that he received and complied with a federal grand jury subpoena seeking records related to the state Senate’s 2020 audit of Maricopa County election results. Petersen, a Republican, confirmed the development in a social media post, stating, “The FBI has the records. Any other report is fake news.”

Multiple U.S. officials confirmed to Fox News that the DOJ is examining a substantial collection of Arizona election data from both 2020 and 2024. This represents a significant expansion of the federal investigation that initially focused on Fulton County, Georgia.

The timing of this investigation coincides with President Donald Trump’s renewed emphasis on election security as the 2026 midterm elections approach. The president has recently intensified his focus on disputes stemming from the 2020 presidential race, which he lost to Joe Biden by narrow margins in several key battleground states, including Arizona.

Maricopa County, Arizona’s most populous county, became a focal point for voter fraud allegations following the 2020 election. Trump lost Arizona by approximately 0.3 percentage points, prompting his campaign to file multiple lawsuits alleging voting irregularities. However, none of these legal challenges proved successful in court.

The White House directed inquiries about the investigation to the FBI, which declined to comment on the matter when contacted by reporters.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, criticized the investigation in a strongly worded statement. “What the Trump administration appears to be pursuing now is not a legitimate law enforcement inquiry,” Mayes said. “It is the weaponization of federal law enforcement in service of crackpots and lies.” Mayes contended that the investigation is based on claims that courts and state investigators have already disproven.

The news of the Arizona subpoena spread quickly after President Trump shared a media report about it on Truth Social, writing, “Great!!! FBI secretly seizes election records from Arizona’s largest county as voting probe expands.”

The expansion into Arizona follows earlier investigative efforts in Georgia, where the DOJ launched a separate probe into the 2020 election earlier this year. Like Maricopa County, Fulton County faced significant allegations of election irregularities in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential contest.

Meanwhile, President Trump has recently taken a firm stance on election security legislation, declaring on social media Sunday that he will not sign any legislation into law until Congress passes the SAVE America Act. This proposed legislation would require voters nationwide to present physical identification to prove citizenship when voting in federal elections. The version Trump supports would also significantly restrict mail-in ballots, allowing them only for military personnel and in other limited circumstances.

The Arizona subpoena represents a significant development in the federal government’s ongoing examination of election procedures and allegations surrounding the 2020 presidential election. As the 2026 midterms approach, election security and integrity continue to be divisive political issues, with partisan disagreements about voting methods, identification requirements, and election administration practices shaping much of the national debate.

The DOJ has not publicly outlined the specific focus or timeline for its expanded investigation into Arizona’s election records.
