Family Shocked as Quiet North Carolina Man Killed After Security Breach at Mar-a-Lago
The cousin of 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, who was shot and killed after breaching security at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, expressed disbelief at the incident, describing Martin as a “good kid” who was quiet and generous.
“He’s a good kid,” said Braeden Fields, 19, in an interview with The Associated Press. “I wouldn’t believe he would do something like this. It’s mind-blowing.”
According to authorities, Martin made an “unauthorized entry” through the north gate of the Palm Beach, Florida resort around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, driving through as another vehicle was exiting. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told reporters that Martin was carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel container when he was confronted by Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy.
“He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with him – at which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw explained. “At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.”
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. Trump, who frequently spends weekends at Mar-a-Lago, was at the White House when the incident occurred.
Fields painted a starkly different picture of his cousin than the armed intruder described by law enforcement. He claimed Martin was afraid of guns and didn’t know how to use them. “He wouldn’t even hurt an ant,” Fields said, adding that Martin regularly donated money he earned from his job at a local golf course to charity.
In a particularly jarring contradiction, Fields noted that Martin came from a family of Trump supporters. “We are big Trump supporters, all of us. Everybody,” he said, though he mentioned that his cousin was “real quiet, never really talked about anything,” including politics.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina reported that Martin’s family had filed a missing person report around 1:38 a.m. Sunday – roughly the same time as the Mar-a-Lago incident. Neighbor Cindy Carlyle told local news station WRAL that she had seen Martin’s mother going to a gas station to report him missing.
“She had no idea where he was,” Carlyle said. “She was very upset, and she just made the comment that she had gotten a text from him, you know, saying that, ‘I’m okay, I love you.'”
Cindy’s husband, Danny Carlyle, described the situation as “just like a nightmare,” adding that “things like this don’t happen close to home.” He suggested the tragedy was likely something that could have been avoided.
The sheriff’s office stated it had no prior history with Martin and has since turned over the missing person case information to federal authorities, who are now working to compile a psychological profile on the young man.
This incident comes amid heightened concerns about security threats involving political figures. It follows other recent incidents, including a man found dead with an arsenal of weapons at a Nevada substation in a suspected terror incident, and another individual arrested after running toward the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun.
Security measures at Mar-a-Lago have been significantly enhanced since Trump took office in 2017, with the Secret Service maintaining a continuous presence at the property that serves as both a private club and the former president’s primary residence when not in Washington.
Investigators continue to examine possible motives behind Martin’s actions as they piece together the events leading up to the fatal confrontation.
