DOJ Deploys Additional Prosecutors to Minnesota Amid Immigration Enforcement Surge

The Department of Justice is dispatching a surge of prosecutors to Minnesota to handle an increasing caseload of fraud and immigration cases, according to two federal sources familiar with the matter.

Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino confirmed the reinforcements are arriving in the Twin Cities area. These prosecutors are expected to actively charge cases, particularly those related to immigration enforcement, in alignment with President Donald Trump’s administration priorities.

“We’re getting support all the way around the block here on the ground from prosecutors, whether it’s the Department of Justice or the Department of Homeland Security,” Bovino told reporters. “Additional lawyers and prosecutors have been sent into the area here, and more are on the way.”

The commander added a stern warning: “Anyone that wants to assault a federal officer, look out, we’ve got some fantastic prosecutors here in Minneapolis.”

The prosecutorial reinforcements come as Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations have expanded across Minneapolis and St. Paul. Hundreds of additional federal officers have been deployed throughout the Twin Cities region in recent weeks as part of a heightened enforcement operation.

Bovino urged undocumented immigrants in the area to use the CBP Home app, warning that “thousands of agents” are now conducting Title 8 enforcement operations throughout the region. Title 8 refers to the section of U.S. Code dealing with immigration law enforcement.

The federal presence has faced significant local resistance. Agents operating in Minneapolis have encountered frequent harassment from anti-ICE demonstrators, though Bovino insists morale among officers remains high. He noted that most protesters don’t understand that immigration enforcement often targets individuals with violent criminal histories.

Tensions in Minneapolis escalated dramatically last Wednesday when 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent during an immigration enforcement operation. Federal officials claim Good attempted to drive her vehicle toward agents during the encounter, though this account has been disputed by family members and some local leaders.

The shooting triggered street protests and increased scrutiny of federal enforcement activities in the city, leading to multiple confrontations between demonstrators and federal agents. City officials report that residents have raised concerns about neighborhood access, with numerous 311 calls requesting the removal of barriers placed during protests.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has been outspoken in his criticism of federal immigration enforcement in his city following the shooting. In stark terms, Frey told ICE to “get the f— out of Minneapolis” and rejected the Department of Homeland Security’s version of events surrounding Good’s death. The mayor has argued that the federal agents’ presence has contributed to chaos and undermined public safety rather than enhanced it.

The deployment of additional prosecutors signals the administration’s commitment to continuing and potentially intensifying immigration enforcement operations despite local opposition. The move represents a significant escalation in federal resources dedicated to immigration enforcement in the Minneapolis area, highlighting the growing tensions between federal and local authorities over immigration policy.

As community memorials for Good remain in place, city officials have emphasized that surrounding streets must remain clear to ensure emergency access, indicating the delicate balance they’re attempting to maintain between respecting community grief and ensuring public safety amid ongoing tensions.
