DHS Pushes Back as House Democrats Call for Noem’s Impeachment Over Immigration Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a firm response after several prominent Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee held a press conference criticizing the Trump administration’s immigration policies and calling for Secretary Kristi Noem’s impeachment.

Led by Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the news conference featured high-profile lawmakers including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Al Green (D-Texas). The lawmakers voiced concerns about DHS’s handling of immigration and federal law enforcement’s actions in Minneapolis.

The press conference came in the wake of the fatal ICE-involved shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minnesota, an incident that has sparked unrest across the state and prompted nationwide demonstrations. Thompson described Good as “a wife, a writer, a poet, a devoted Christian and a U.S. citizen” and mother of three children. Omar added that Good died “because she chose love and solidarity over fear.”

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) directed particularly pointed comments at Secretary Noem: “You are terrible at doing your job. You are incompetent. You are shameless. But most of all, you are cruel,” she said. “The American people do not want you. We do not want you. And we will do whatever we need to do to make sure you will not hold that post soon.”

A Democratic aide told Fox News Digital that lawmakers would continue introducing legislation attempting “to rein in” ICE while investigating DHS and Secretary Noem for potential legal violations.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin defended the department’s actions in a statement to Fox News Digital, emphasizing that DHS is fulfilling its law enforcement mandate.

“DHS is a law enforcement agency — enforcing the rule of law passed by Congress. If members don’t like the law, it is quite literally their job to change it,” McLaughlin stated.

She added: “As ICE officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them, politicians are more focused on showmanship and fundraising clicks than actually removing criminals from our streets. We hope these members get serious about doing their job to protect American people, which is what this Department is doing under Secretary Noem.”

To support their position, DHS shared information about several criminal illegal immigrants who had been arrested during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. These individuals had convictions ranging from sexual assault of minors to homicide, with some having final removal orders dating back decades.

Among those highlighted was Hernan Cortes-Valencia, a Mexican national with a final removal order from 2016 who had been convicted of sexual assault against a child and multiple DUIs; Sriudorn Phaivan from Laos, with numerous convictions including sexual offenses; and Ge Yang, also from Laos, convicted of rape and aggravated assault.

The political context for this dispute remains complex. While Democrats have expressed intentions to introduce legislation to modify immigration enforcement, they currently control neither the House nor the Senate, making it difficult to advance policy changes without bipartisan support.

The exchange highlights the deep political divide over immigration policy under the Trump administration, with Secretary Noem’s DHS emphasizing their focus on removing individuals with serious criminal convictions while congressional Democrats push for significant changes to enforcement practices.

This controversy occurs amid a reported surge in attacks against ICE officers, with the agency continuing operations targeting individuals with outstanding deportation orders, particularly those with criminal records.

The fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good is a tragic event that deserves a thorough investigation. However, I’m not sure impeachment is the right response here. The DHS is correct that Congress needs to take the lead in updating immigration laws to address the root issues.

    • Emotions are understandably running high, but it’s important that any actions taken are grounded in facts and the democratic process. I hope all parties can find a path forward that upholds justice and the rule of law.

This appears to be a complex political dispute with valid concerns on both sides. While I don’t have a strong opinion on the specifics, I hope the DHS and Congress can work together constructively to find solutions that balance security, fairness, and compassion.

This is a complex and contentious issue. While I can understand the Democrats’ concerns, the DHS is right that changing immigration laws is ultimately Congress’s responsibility. Both sides should work together to find practical solutions that uphold the rule of law and protect vulnerable populations.

    • I agree that this is a challenging situation with valid arguments on both sides. Constructive dialogue and compromise will be key to making progress.

  4. While the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good is understandably upsetting, I’m not convinced that impeachment is the right course of action here. The DHS seems to have a valid point that Congress needs to take the lead in updating immigration laws. I hope all parties can approach this issue with good faith and pragmatism.

Immigration is a sensitive and divisive topic. I can see merits to the arguments made by both the DHS and the Democratic lawmakers. Ultimately, I believe the best path forward is for Congress to thoughtfully update immigration laws in a way that balances enforcement, humanitarian concerns, and economic needs.

Agreed. This is an issue that requires nuanced policymaking, not political grandstanding. I hope the relevant stakeholders can find common ground and enact reforms that serve the national interest.
