Senator Gallego Draws Criticism for Defending Swalwell Against Misconduct Allegations

Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego has come under fire for attempting to discredit social media users raising sexual misconduct allegations against California Representative Eric Swalwell, who is currently running for governor.

The controversy began when content creator Arielle Fodor, known online as “Mrs. Frazzled,” wrote on social platform X that Swalwell’s political career was finished following the allegations. “He isn’t going to sue ANYBODY over talking about this because discovery would kick his a–. Why this man ran for governor is BEYOND ME,” Fodor posted.

Gallego responded at 1:53 a.m. Tuesday, questioning Fodor’s credibility by noting, “This person started to posting for the first time 3 days ago…” Several hours later, he added another defense of his longtime friend: “When you are in first place, is when they target you. Eric is a fighter and he will win the Governors race.”

The senator’s response has sparked backlash from both Democratic and Republican political strategists. Democratic campaign strategist Bhavik Lathia called it “a very very bad look,” adding there was “no reason for him to proactively smear Dem women and advocates” especially since the race isn’t even in Gallego’s home state of Arizona.

Simone Kathleen Rossi, another Democratic strategist, warned Gallego about trying to discredit women and pointed out that Fodor has “a storied internet platform, and dedication to amplifying Democratic organizations such as Defense of Democracy.”

The allegations against Swalwell have been circulating on social media, elevated by Democratic-aligned figures including Fodor and Cheyenne Hunt, a former Capitol Hill staffer who now works as a nonprofit director at Gen-Z for Change. Swalwell has strongly denied all allegations.

Neither Gallego nor Swalwell responded to requests for comment from Fox News Digital, which included questions about critics’ suggestions that Gallego was attempting to discredit women raising the allegations rather than addressing them directly.

Conservative political strategist Alec Sears criticized what he perceived as hypocrisy, commenting: “Believe all women until it’s politically inconvenient.”

The controversy highlights the personal and professional relationship between Gallego and Swalwell, which spans at least a decade. In 2021, the pair made headlines during a now-infamous trip to Qatar funded by the Qatari Business Council, where they were photographed on a camel excursion along the Persian Gulf with their spouses. The trip included accommodations at a luxury Four Seasons hotel and various meetings and activities.

Fodor, whom Gallego attempted to discredit, maintains a newsletter called “Frazzled About Education” and has an established following online. Her comments about Swalwell have gained significant traction amid the developing story.

As Swalwell continues his campaign for California governor, these allegations and the response from his political allies like Gallego have created additional scrutiny around his candidacy. Political observers note that how Democratic leadership responds to these allegations could have broader implications for the party’s credibility on issues of sexual misconduct.

The situation remains fluid as more information emerges about both the allegations against Swalwell and the political fallout from Gallego’s defensive posture toward his longtime colleague and friend.
