Comer Delays Clinton Depositions in Epstein Probe Until January, Threatens Contempt
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has postponed scheduled depositions for former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton until January 2026, while issuing a stern warning that failure to appear will result in immediate contempt of Congress proceedings.
In a letter sent Monday evening to the Clintons’ attorney, Comer rescheduled the former president’s testimony for January 13, 2026, and Hillary Clinton’s for January 14, 2026. The Kentucky Republican indicated that the delay was prompted by a scheduling conflict involving a funeral.
“They’re saying now that he’s going to a funeral on that day, so we’ve been going back and forth with the lawyer,” Comer told Fox News Digital. “We’re going to hold him in contempt if he doesn’t show up for his deposition.”
The letter criticized the Clintons’ legal team for failing to provide alternative dates for testimony and dismissed arguments that the couple should receive the same written statement accommodations granted to other witnesses.
“Your correspondence with the Committee continues to ignore the Committee’s arguments, misstates relevant facts, and seeks information about the Committee’s investigation to which neither you nor your clients are entitled,” Comer wrote, adding that other witnesses were excused from in-person appearances only because they “lacked any relevant information to the Committee’s investigation or otherwise had serious health issues.”
The depositions are part of the committee’s broader investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The Clintons were among numerous high-profile individuals subpoenaed earlier this year.
To date, only two officials have appeared for in-person testimony: former Trump administration Attorney General Bill Barr and former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta. Others have received postponements or been allowed to submit written statements, options Comer seems unwilling to extend to the Clintons.
Comer specifically highlighted the Clintons’ connections to Epstein as justification for requiring their in-person testimony. “Unlike these other individuals, President Clinton and Secretary Clinton had a personal relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell,” the chairman noted in his letter.
The committee has previously released documents and photographs showing Bill Clinton socializing with Epstein, including entries in a book compiled for Epstein’s 50th birthday. Similar evidence has shown former President Donald Trump’s social connections to Epstein.
The investigation has drawn attention to the extensive network of powerful individuals who maintained relationships with Epstein. However, neither of the Clintons has been implicated in any wrongdoing related to Epstein’s criminal activities, and their social engagements with him reportedly ended well before his 2019 indictment.
The committee’s probe has become increasingly contentious, with partisan disputes over its focus and methods. Comer has previously accused Democratic committee members of “cherry-picking” Epstein-related files and “chasing headlines” rather than conducting a thorough investigation.
The rescheduling sets up a potential showdown in January, with Comer making clear that contempt proceedings will immediately follow if the Clintons fail to appear for their new deposition dates. Such a move would significantly escalate tensions between the powerful political couple and Republican congressional investigators.
As the investigation continues, it remains one of several high-profile congressional probes that will carry over into the next presidential administration, ensuring that questions about Epstein’s connections to political figures will remain in the public discourse well into 2026.
