California Democrats Withdraw Support for Swalwell Following Sexual Assault Allegations

Prominent California Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Adam Schiff, have withdrawn their support for gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct published Friday in the San Francisco Chronicle.

A former female staffer has publicly accused Swalwell of sexual assault, claiming he took advantage of her while she was intoxicated. The allegations include disturbing details of Swalwell allegedly pressuring her to send nude photos, exposing himself to her while driving, and requesting sexual acts. The former staffer also reported waking up naked in Swalwell’s hotel bed on multiple occasions after blacking out from alcohol consumption, with signs they had engaged in intercourse.

“The young woman who has made serious allegations against Congressman Swalwell must be respected and heard,” Pelosi said in a statement. “As I discussed with Swalwell, it is clear that is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign.”

Schiff echoed these sentiments, stating: “I have read the San Francisco Chronicle’s account, and I am deeply distressed by its allegations. This woman was brave to come forward, and we should take her story seriously. I am withdrawing my endorsement immediately and believe that he should withdraw from the race.”

Following the publication of these reports, Swalwell’s campaign website displayed an error page where endorsements had previously been listed, as Democratic support rapidly evaporated.

California Democratic Party Chairman Rusty Hicks issued a statement emphasizing that “the stories of victims and survivors should be heard and believed.” He added that “any person engaged in misconduct must take responsibility and be held accountable for their actions – including a member of Congress and candidate for Governor.”

The California Teachers Association announced on social media that it was “immediately suspending our support” for Swalwell, calling the allegations “incredibly disturbing and unacceptable.”

Fellow gubernatorial candidate and Democrat Matt Mahan, former mayor of San Jose, directly called on Swalwell to exit the race: “To the survivor who risked everything to come forward – I believe you. To the Democratic Party – you’d better hold him accountable. If we don’t, we have no credibility asking anyone else to do the same. To Eric Swalwell – drop out.”

Even Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego, who previously served as chair for Swalwell’s presidential campaign and initially defended him, reversed course after the Chronicle’s report was published. “I’ve read the San Francisco Chronicle’s reporting and I take it seriously. What is described is indefensible,” Gallego wrote on social media. “Women who come forward with accounts like this deserve to be heard with respect, not questioned or dismissed.”

The allegations against Swalwell first gained traction on social media through Democratic activists, including former Capitol Hill staffer Cheyenne Hunt and political content creator Arielle Fodor. The Chronicle’s report marks the first detailed first-hand account of the alleged misconduct.

Following the San Francisco Chronicle’s reporting, CNN published a separate investigation indicating that three additional women also alleged various forms of sexual misconduct by Swalwell, including claims he sent unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos.

Swalwell has previously denied these allegations through cease-and-desist letters sent by his attorney. Neither the congressman nor his legal representation have responded to requests for comment regarding the latest detailed allegations.

The scandal marks a dramatic fall for Swalwell, who has been a prominent voice in California Democratic politics and previously sought the party’s presidential nomination in 2020.
