Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has called for an investigation into Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson following her attendance at the Grammy Awards ceremony, where anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sentiments were expressed by several participants.
In a letter addressed to Chief Justice John Roberts, Blackburn urged an inquiry into whether Jackson’s presence at the event violated the Supreme Court’s Code of Conduct and if it should require her recusal from certain upcoming cases. Jackson attended the awards show as a nominee for narrating the audiobook version of her memoir, “Lovely One.”
“While it is by no means unheard of or unusual for a Supreme Court justice to attend a public function, very rarely—if ever—have justices of our nation’s highest Court been present at an event at which attendees have amplified such far-left rhetoric,” wrote Blackburn, who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Critics of Jackson’s attendance claim she was seen applauding during portions of the ceremony where speakers criticized ICE. Attendees at the event reportedly wore “ICE Out” lapel pins, and some award winners made statements such as “No one is illegal on stolen land” and used expletives when referring to the federal immigration agency.
The timing of Jackson’s Grammy appearance has raised particular concerns among conservatives, as the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear several significant immigration-related cases, including matters concerning birthright citizenship and immigration policies from the Trump administration.
In her letter, Blackburn highlighted what she perceives as a double standard in scrutiny of Supreme Court justices based on political leanings. She referenced previous instances where Democratic senators, including Dick Durbin of Illinois and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, called for Justice Samuel Alito’s recusal from cases related to the 2020 election and January 6 Capitol riot because his wife displayed a Revolutionary War-era flag at their home.
“Unlike these meritless claims against Justice Alito and Justice Thomas, there are serious questions regarding Justice Jackson’s participation in such a brazenly political, anti-law enforcement event and her ability to remain an impartial member of the Supreme Court,” Blackburn stated.
The controversy emerges amid growing tensions over perceived politicization of the nation’s highest court. Recently, Justice Amy Coney Barrett commented on this issue, saying that justices “wear black, not red or blue,” in reference to criticisms about partisan influences on judicial decisions.
This incident reflects the broader debate about judicial impartiality and the appropriate boundaries for Supreme Court justices’ public appearances. Legal experts have long debated how justices should balance their public lives with the need to maintain both actual impartiality and the appearance of impartiality in their official roles.
Since joining the Supreme Court in 2022 as the first Black woman justice, Jackson has faced heightened scrutiny from conservative lawmakers. Her nomination by President Biden fulfilled his campaign promise to appoint a Black woman to the nation’s highest court, but her confirmation process was marked by partisan divisions that continue to surface in various contexts.
Neither Senator Blackburn’s office nor the Supreme Court has provided public comments in response to inquiries about this matter. As the controversy unfolds, it adds another layer to ongoing discussions about judicial ethics, political polarization, and the public role of Supreme Court justices in contemporary American society.

This is a complex issue that seems to have political undertones. I think it’s important to let the investigation proceed objectively before drawing conclusions. Maintaining public trust in the Supreme Court is crucial, so any potential ethical breaches warrant scrutiny.
While I can understand the senator’s concerns about judicial impartiality, I would caution against rushing to judgment here. Supreme Court justices must navigate a delicate balance, and the specifics of this situation merit careful, impartial review before any findings are made public.
Well said. Maintaining the integrity of the judiciary should be the top priority, but that requires a thorough, unbiased examination of the facts.
As a general principle, I believe Supreme Court justices should maintain a neutral public profile and avoid even the appearance of political bias. However, the specifics here seem murky and warrant further investigation before drawing conclusions.
That’s a fair perspective. Upholding the integrity of the judiciary is critical, so any potential impropriety deserves thorough review.
This seems like a politically-charged issue with valid concerns on both sides. I’d need to see more details before forming a strong opinion. Attending high-profile events can put Supreme Court justices in tricky situations when controversial topics arise.
Agreed, it’s a sensitive topic that requires careful consideration. The public role of Supreme Court justices comes with complex responsibilities.
I’m curious to learn more about the context and Justice Jackson’s actions at the Grammys. Attending high-profile events can be tricky for judges, and any hint of political activism is concerning. But we should withhold judgment until the facts are clear.
