Officials in Social Circle, Georgia, are addressing concerns about a proposed data center project that has sparked controversy among local residents. Mayor David Keener is working to dispel what he calls “misinformation” about the development, which would be located near the city’s downtown area.

“We want to make sure that our citizens have accurate information,” Keener said during a recent city council meeting. “There has been a lot of discussion on social media that contains inaccurate statements about what this project entails.”

The proposed data center, which would be built on approximately 100 acres of land, has generated significant public interest since plans were first announced last month. Residents have raised questions about potential noise pollution, water usage, and environmental impact.

According to city documents, the facility would house computer systems and servers for data storage and processing. The developer, whose name has not been publicly disclosed due to ongoing negotiations, has promised to implement noise-reduction technologies and sustainable practices.

Keener emphasized that the project is still in the preliminary stages. “No final decisions have been made, and we are committed to a transparent process that includes community input,” he said.

Social Circle, located about 45 miles east of Atlanta, has seen increased interest from technology companies in recent years. The city’s proximity to metro Atlanta, combined with lower land costs and available infrastructure, makes it an attractive location for data centers, which are in high demand due to artificial intelligence and cloud computing growth.

Economic development officials estimate the project could bring up to 50 permanent jobs to the area and generate significant tax revenue for the city. The facility would also require hundreds of construction workers during the building phase, potentially boosting local businesses.

However, some residents remain skeptical. During public comment sessions, concerns were raised about the facility’s power consumption and potential strain on local utilities.

“We’ve heard from citizens who are worried about electricity rates going up or water supplies being affected,” acknowledged City Manager Adele Schirmer. “We’re working with utility providers to ensure that any development would be sustainable and not negatively impact our existing infrastructure.”

Data centers typically consume large amounts of electricity to power and cool their servers. Modern facilities, however, increasingly incorporate energy-efficient designs and renewable energy sources to minimize their environmental footprint.

The controversy in Social Circle mirrors similar debates occurring across the country as data center development accelerates to meet growing digital demands. In Virginia’s “Data Center Alley,” which houses the world’s largest concentration of such facilities, communities have grappled with balancing economic benefits against quality of life concerns.

Industry analysts note that data center construction has become a significant economic driver nationwide. According to research firm Synergy Research Group, U.S. data center investments exceeded $40 billion in 2022, a figure expected to grow substantially over the next decade.

City officials have scheduled additional public information sessions for the coming weeks. They plan to present detailed analyses of the project’s potential impacts on traffic, noise levels, and utility systems.

“We understand this is a significant development for our community,” Keener said. “We want to make decisions based on facts, not rumors or misunderstandings.”

The city council is expected to vote on preliminary approvals for the project next month, though final agreements would still require additional regulatory steps and environmental assessments.

As the debate continues, both supporters citing economic benefits and opponents concerned about community character are mobilizing to make their voices heard in what has become one of the most significant development decisions in Social Circle’s recent history.
