Chinese automaker BYD has joined Electric Vehicles UK (EVUK), an industry-to-consumer advocacy group established in 2024, as part of a strategic partnership aimed at combating misinformation about electric vehicles in the British market.

“We’re delighted to be joining EVUK to fully support its mission to increase consumer awareness of electric vehicles,” said Bono Ge, BYD’s representative, highlighting the company’s commitment to educating potential customers about the benefits of electric mobility.

Founded just two years ago, EVUK has positioned itself as a key player in the effort to address skepticism and misinformation regarding electric vehicles. The organization employs a range of strategies, including organizing test drives for skeptics and engaging with policymakers and media outlets to promote fact-based messaging about EVs.

The partnership comes amid significant growth in the UK’s electric vehicle market. According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), battery-electric vehicles accounted for 23.4% of new car registrations throughout 2025, with this figure rising to 32.2% in December alone. These statistics reflect the accelerating transition toward electric mobility in the United Kingdom.

Notably, BYD has established itself as a formidable player in the UK market, registering 51,422 vehicles last year—outpacing Tesla, which recorded 45,513 registrations. This performance marks a significant achievement for the Chinese manufacturer as it continues to expand its presence in European markets.

Tanya Sinclair of EVUK emphasized that the partnership would help “provide clear information and insight” to consumers considering the switch to electric vehicles. Meanwhile, Ge highlighted the practical advantages of electric cars, including their “reduced running costs” compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Through this collaboration, BYD will gain access to consumer events and establish closer coordination with EVUK in public and media outreach efforts. The initiative aims to reach individuals who are curious about electric vehicles but may be hesitant due to misconceptions or information overload in the marketplace.

Industry experts note that “new energy vehicle” has become a common term used by BYD and other manufacturers to describe both fully electric cars and plug-in hybrids. While fully electric vehicles operate exclusively on battery power, plug-in hybrids combine electric propulsion with conventional fuel systems, offering a transitional option for consumers not yet ready to commit to purely electric transportation.

The partnership extends beyond mere marketing objectives. EVUK is committed to dispelling myths surrounding electric vehicles and providing straightforward answers to common consumer questions regarding range, charging time, and battery longevity—practical concerns that often influence purchasing decisions.

This collaboration takes on additional significance in the context of the UK’s zero-emission vehicle mandate, which requires manufacturers to sell an increasing proportion of cars with zero tailpipe emissions. This regulatory framework makes consumer confidence in electric vehicles a critical factor for automotive manufacturers’ planning and pricing strategies.

However, industry observers point out that messaging alone cannot address infrastructural challenges. The patchy distribution of public charging facilities and the higher upfront costs of electric vehicles remain significant barriers to widespread adoption, even as more models enter the market.

For BYD, this partnership represents another strategic move to normalize electric vehicles in the British market, positioning them not as a technological leap but as a standard choice for mainstream consumers. As one of China’s largest automakers and a global leader in battery technology, BYD’s growing presence in the UK market signals the increasingly competitive landscape of electric mobility in Europe.
