Rather than stealing Facebook credentials, the attackers aim to gain access to victims’ WhatsApp accounts by exploiting the platform’s device-linking feature. When victims scan a presented QR code or enter their phone number, the attackers gain full access to the victim’s WhatsApp account, allowing them to propagate the scam to the victim’s contacts.
In a separate large-scale operation, researchers at RavenMail uncovered a phishing campaign that targeted over 3,000 organizations last month, primarily in manufacturing. The attack leveraged legitimate Google infrastructure to bypass traditional security defenses.
“In each case, emails were sent from legitimate Google infrastructure, passed SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and used trusted Google-hosted URLs as payloads,” RavenMail explains. “This fundamentally breaks the trust model that most email security platforms rely on.”
North Korean threat actors have also been observed distributing malware through QR codes. The “Kimsuky” group created phishing sites impersonating delivery services that instruct desktop users to scan QR codes to view content on their phones, effectively bypassing corporate security measures.
Growing Need for Human-Focused Security
As these threats evolve, security experts emphasize that technical solutions alone cannot address the full spectrum of risks. Organizations increasingly recognize the importance of training employees to recognize manipulation attempts across all digital channels.
“Visual content can no longer be trusted at face value, especially during fast-moving events,” notes a cybersecurity expert. “Training people to pause, question sources, and look for verification is just as important for news consumption as it is for email security.”
