In a significant escalation of its content moderation efforts, Elon Musk’s X has revealed that it suspended approximately 800 million accounts over a 12-month period as part of its ongoing battle against platform manipulation. The social media company disclosed these figures during testimony to British MPs, highlighting the “massive” scale of attempts to manipulate public discourse on its platform.

Wifredo Fernández, a government affairs executive at X Corp, told the UK’s foreign affairs committee via video link on Monday that the company faces continuous challenges from coordinated attempts to create “inauthentic networks of accounts.” Fernández emphasized the relentless nature of these threats, noting that “several hundred million accounts” were taken down in the latter part of last year alone.

“There are efforts every single day to create inauthentic networks of accounts,” Fernández stated, adding that he remained “quite confident” about the authenticity of accounts currently active on the platform, which has approximately 300 million monthly users worldwide.

According to X’s testimony, Russia leads as the most prolific state actor attempting to manipulate the platform, followed by Iran and China. Fernández specifically highlighted Russian efforts to undermine the 2024 US presidential election and “stoke division” through coordinated campaigns where numerous accounts attempt to “flood the zone” with particular narratives.

The company defines manipulative accounts as those engaging in “bulk, aggressive or disruptive activity that misleads others and/or disrupts their experience.” Spam, meanwhile, refers to “unsolicited, repeated actions” affecting other users, typically involving streams of low-quality content.

This unprecedented scale of account suspensions provides a rare glimpse into the magnitude of content moderation challenges facing major social media platforms. While X disclosed the total number of suspensions for violating rules on platform manipulation and spam, it did not specify how many of these removals were directly related to foreign interference operations.

Since Musk’s acquisition of the platform (formerly Twitter) in 2022 for $44 billion, X has faced significant criticism regarding its approach to content moderation. Critics point to incidents like the aftermath of the Southport stabbings in the UK, where the platform was accused of helping spread inflammatory speculation about the tragic murder of three children by Axel Rudakubana.

The issue of spam accounts has been particularly significant for Musk, who cited concerns about the authenticity of accounts as one of his primary reasons for attempting to back out of the Twitter acquisition in 2022. Despite these hesitations, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO ultimately completed the purchase amid expert warnings about potential legal consequences of abandoning the deal.

This aggressive account suspension campaign represents one of the largest-scale content moderation efforts publicly disclosed by a major social media platform. It comes amid growing global concern about the role of social media in elections, public discourse, and information integrity.

The revelation also raises questions about the effectiveness of automated systems versus human moderation, the criteria used for account suspensions, and how X balances free expression concerns with platform integrity. The company has previously faced criticism both for over-moderation and under-moderation of content, highlighting the complex challenges in maintaining a safe, authentic online environment.

As social media continues to play a central role in public discourse, X’s battle against inauthentic accounts illustrates the ongoing tensions between maintaining open platforms and preventing manipulation by bad actors, particularly state-sponsored campaigns designed to influence public opinion across national boundaries.
