Media Manipulation Threatens India’s Online News Ecosystem, Study Reveals

A comprehensive analysis of Twitter data has uncovered disturbing evidence of widespread media manipulation in India’s online news ecosystem, raising concerns about the quality of information available to citizens in the world’s largest democracy.

The research, conducted by Sanjana Rajgarhia, examined approximately 3.5 million tweets from the final quarter of 2019, focusing specifically on discourse related to Kashmir—a politically contentious region that has long been a flashpoint in Indian politics.

While access to news in India has expanded dramatically in recent years due to rapid growth in internet services, the quality of this information has become increasingly questionable. A 2019 Reuters study had previously highlighted widespread public concern regarding online news quality in the country, and Rajgarhia’s findings appear to validate these worries.

The study defines media manipulation as efforts to “exploit technical, social, economic, and institutional configurations of media to catalyze social change, sow dissent, and challenge the stability of social institutions.” Such manipulators are typically motivated by desires to spread particular ideologies, generate revenue, or gain status and attention.

Kashmir provided an ideal lens through which to examine this phenomenon. In mid-2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped Jammu & Kashmir of its special status by abrogating Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, bringing the region into sharp national focus. The government simultaneously imposed severe restrictions on internet access, mobile services, movement of people, and press freedoms in the region, creating significant information gaps and uncertainties.

The research specifically targeted two manipulation tactics on Twitter: efforts to drive societal division and polarization, and the spread of pro-government propaganda. The first category manifested through the use of derogatory terminology targeted at liberals and government critics. The second appeared in misleading portrayals of the situation in Kashmir as “normal” despite documented restrictions and unrest.

Twitter was selected as the platform for investigation due to its accessibility through API data, its prominence in Indian political discourse, and its documented history as a venue for manipulation attempts. Unlike more closed platforms such as WhatsApp or Facebook, Twitter’s relatively open nature allows for more comprehensive data collection and analysis.

The study sought to answer two fundamental questions: Is there concrete evidence of media manipulation in India’s online news ecosystem, who are the influential players, and what tactics do they employ? Additionally, it examined whether these tactics violate platform policies and what, if any, actions are being taken against them.

Rajgarhia’s analysis suggests that media manipulation is not only present but pervasive within India’s digital information environment. The findings raise serious concerns about the implications for democratic discourse in a country where access to accurate, high-quality information is essential for civic participation.

The research highlights a growing tension between increased access to information and deteriorating information quality. As more Indians come online and engage with news through digital platforms, the vulnerability to manipulation tactics appears to be increasing rather than decreasing.

These developments come at a critical time for Indian democracy, which relies on citizens having access to reliable information and forums for meaningful deliberation. The study underscores the urgent need for platform accountability, media literacy initiatives, and potential regulatory frameworks to address the challenge of media manipulation in the world’s largest democracy.

As political polarization continues to intensify across India, understanding and addressing these manipulation tactics will be crucial for preserving the integrity of the country’s information ecosystem and, by extension, its democratic processes.
