Behind the scenes, the BBC R&D team has assembled what they describe as “the largest proprietary dataset of its kind,” containing over one million examples of partially manipulated images. This extensive collection underpins their in-house models, which leverage foundation models to detect various forms of manipulation.

The team has also conducted comprehensive benchmarking of existing detection tools to evaluate performance, bias, and reliability across leading commercial systems—a commitment to transparency that ensures their technology remains both effective and accountable.

The BBC’s research efforts are gaining international recognition. In collaboration with the University of Oxford, the team recently had their research poster “Towards Reliable Identification of Diffusion-based Image Manipulations” accepted at NeurIPS 2025, one of the world’s premier AI conferences. The work introduces RADAR, a new method that uses multi-modal signals to detect inpainted or diffusion-edited regions with unprecedented accuracy.

While their image detection tools are already in use across multiple BBC divisions, the team is now tackling the more complex challenge of video deepfake detection. The BBC maintains extensive collaborative relationships with leading universities, including Oxford, Surrey, and Naples Federico II, as well as organizations like Nvidia, the European Broadcasting Union, and the Home Office deepfake detection challenge. These partnerships keep the BBC at the forefront of AI research while ensuring their work remains grounded in practical applications.

Looking ahead, the team plans to roll out new versions of their detection tool prototypes, integrate them across BBC platforms, and expand research into cross-modal detection that combines audio, image, and video analysis for more reliable verification.
