Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has publicly challenged Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi to retract statements regarding the alleged arrest of Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, claiming Obi spread false information that could potentially incite violence.

In a strongly worded statement released yesterday, Omokri asserted that the Department of State Services (DSS) never detained the cleric, contrary to Obi’s public claims. The controversy adds another layer to Nigeria’s already tense political atmosphere following the contested 2023 presidential elections.

“Having given false information to the effect that Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar was arrested by the Department of State Security, when in fact he was not arrested, don’t you think it is in the interest of the public and of justice for you to correct the fallacious claims you made?” Omokri stated.

According to Omokri, who served as an aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, the cleric himself has refuted the arrest claims in a video statement. This contradiction puts Obi’s credibility into question at a time when political tensions remain high across Nigeria.

The former presidential aide warned that Obi’s failure to issue a correction could be interpreted as a deliberate attempt to provoke public unrest. “Failure to do so would appear as though you actually intended by your statement to incite members of the public to violence,” he emphasized.

Political analysts note that such accusations carry significant weight in Nigeria, where religious and ethnic tensions can quickly escalate. Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, a respected religious figure, commands substantial following in parts of northern Nigeria, making any claims about his detention particularly sensitive.

Omokri framed the situation as a fundamental test of Obi’s leadership qualities and ethical standards. “This is a test of leadership. Will you own up to your fake news and correct yourself, or will you leave your false narrative to fester?” he challenged.

The dispute highlights the growing concern over misinformation in Nigerian politics, especially on social media platforms where unverified claims can rapidly spread. Since losing the 2023 presidential election to Bola Tinubu, Obi has maintained a strong public profile and continues to command significant support, particularly among younger Nigerians.

Omokri’s rebuke included a philosophical observation about human nature and responsibility. “Making a mistake is a human weakness. Refusing to correct it when you have the power to do so is human wickedness,” he stated before directly questioning Obi’s character: “So, Peter, which is it? Are you weak or wicked?”

The Department of State Services, Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, has not officially commented on the controversy. However, security agencies in Nigeria have frequently been at the center of political disputes, with opposition figures often accusing them of partisan operations.

As of press time, Peter Obi has not publicly responded to Omokri’s demands for a retraction. The Labour Party camp has generally maintained that their statements on government actions remain factual and in the public interest.

The incident underscores the heightened scrutiny faced by political figures in Nigeria’s polarized environment, where claims and counterclaims frequently dominate public discourse. Media watchdogs have consistently called for greater verification of information before public dissemination by political leaders.

Political observers suggest that how Obi responds to this challenge could influence his standing among supporters who view him as representing a different kind of politics in Nigeria’s often contentious political landscape.

Transparency and accountability are crucial in the political process. If there are contradictions between the claims made by Obi and the cleric’s own statement, it’s reasonable for Omokri to call for a correction.
