In the wake of escalating tensions in the Middle East, social media platforms have become flooded with misinformation, creating a digital landscape where distinguishing fact from fiction has become increasingly difficult for users.

Fact-checkers have identified at least 12 miscaptioned videos and seven AI-generated or manipulated images that have collectively garnered thousands of interactions. While ten of the most viral posts have been debunked, experts suggest this represents merely a fraction of the false content currently circulating online.

The proliferation of AI-generated content masquerading as authentic documentation of current events has become particularly troubling. Even visibly questionable images, including those bearing obvious AI watermarks—such as purported photos of captured U.S. special forces—continue to be shared widely across platforms. The concerning trend points to both the volume of fabricated content and the ease with which it can be created and distributed.

Recent examples include a fabricated image showing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei buried in rubble, along with AI-generated visuals depicting Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier engulfed in flames. These sophisticated forgeries demonstrate how AI technology is being weaponized to spread disinformation during international crises.

However, much of the misinformation relies on traditional deception tactics, primarily involving miscaptioned archival footage. One widely shared post falsely claimed UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood had observed a minute’s silence for Ayatollah Khamenei in Birmingham, using an unrelated photo of her at a Southport mosque in 2024.

Recycled footage from previous conflicts and unrelated incidents has been repurposed to fit current narratives. A dramatic video of explosions near a building, falsely identified as occurring in Tel Aviv, actually shows a warehouse fire in China from 2015. This same footage was previously miscaptioned during Iran’s missile attack on Israel in October 2023, and before that during Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Other examples include footage of football celebrations in Algiers recirculated with claims it showed Iranian attacks on Tel Aviv, and a video dating back to the 2003 Iraq War being presented as recent attacks on U.S. bases in the Gulf. Even footage of a 2015 apartment fire in the UAE has been falsely labeled as showing missile strikes on Dubai.

In another case, fact-checkers matched features in a video claimed to show a U.S. airbase in Saudi Arabia “burnt to ashes” after an Iranian missile attack to satellite images of a Yemeni port, confirming the footage was unrelated to current events.

For those seeking to verify content themselves, digital literacy experts recommend several approaches. Reverse image searches can help determine if pictures or videos appeared online previously. Google’s reverse image search function includes an “About this image” feature that can identify if a picture contains Google AI’s digital watermark “SynthID”—though absence of this marker doesn’t guarantee authenticity.

Some AI-generated content may contain visible watermarks from platforms like Sora, Gemini, or Grok, though these can easily be cropped before sharing.

The proliferation of misinformation during international conflicts highlights the importance of critical media consumption. As verification becomes increasingly complex, users are encouraged to approach dramatic imagery with skepticism and utilize fact-checking resources before sharing potentially misleading content that could further inflame tensions during an already volatile period in the Middle East.
