Nigerian Islamic Movement Rejects Israeli Ambassador’s Terrorism Allegations

The Media Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has issued a forceful rebuttal against recent accusations made by Israeli Ambassador Michael Freeman, who allegedly linked the movement and Iran to terrorism and regional instability in West Africa.

In a statement released Tuesday, the forum characterized the ambassador’s claims as “a blatant falsehood” and warned they could be seen as preparation for “possible false-flag terrorism by the Israelis.” The group questioned the moral authority of Israel to make such accusations given its current international standing.

“It is both inappropriate and unacceptable for the representative of a state widely found guilty of committing genocide and grave violations of international laws to lecture others about terrorism or security,” the statement read.

The forum highlighted Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, noting that “over 70,000 people have been killed in less than three years—more than 70% of them women and children,” according to their figures. These actions, they claimed, have been documented by various international organizations and human rights groups.

The statement also pointed to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which has reportedly limited his travel to multiple countries, including many in Europe. “It is therefore ironic that the representative of such a state seeks to label others as sponsors of terrorism,” the forum stated.

Defending its legitimacy, the Islamic Movement described itself not as an organization but as “a principled movement built on an ideology and a concept that advocates justice and resistance against oppression.” The statement emphasized that in five decades of Islamic activism in Nigeria, no court has convicted the movement of terrorism or violent activity.

“At no point in our history have the adherents of the movement attacked any individual or organisation in the name of the movement,” the forum asserted.

The group maintained that its members, like all Nigerian citizens, have constitutional rights to express solidarity with oppressed people globally. They characterized their support for Palestinians and other communities as “rooted in moral conviction, humanitarian concern, and the universal principles of justice.”

This dispute occurs against a backdrop of increasing diplomatic tensions in the region. Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation and a significant player in West African politics, has maintained cautious diplomatic relations with both Israel and Iran. The country has substantial Muslim and Christian populations, making religious matters politically sensitive.

The Israeli Embassy in Nigeria has not yet responded to requests for comment on these allegations. However, Israel has previously expressed concerns about Iran’s influence in Africa, particularly through what it describes as proxy groups.

International observers note that such diplomatic exchanges reflect broader geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran that occasionally play out in third countries through public statements and accusations.

The Media Forum concluded its statement by urging “the Nigerian public to disregard these unfounded allegations and remain vigilant against attempts to sow division, misinformation, and hostility among the people.”

The statement was signed by Ammar Muhammad Rajab, Chairman of the Media Forum of the Islamic Movement.
