Union Tensions Rise at Portland’s Holy Donut as Management Disputes Worker Claims

A labor dispute has erupted at the popular Maine bakery chain Holy Donut, with management and workers at the Park Avenue location in Portland finding themselves at odds over unionization efforts. The company issued a strong response Thursday night to unionization attempts that began a week earlier, claiming employees made false accusations against the business.

In a social media statement, Holy Donut management acknowledged their willingness to petition the National Labor Relations Board for a formal vote on unionization but expressed skepticism about how a union would “advance the interests of our teammates and our company.”

The conflict began when Park Avenue employees announced their intent to unionize, citing numerous workplace concerns. According to the workers, these issues include low wages, unsafe and unhealthy working conditions, inadequate benefits, fear of workplace retaliation, insufficient staffing levels, and unpredictable scheduling practices. Workers claim management has either ignored these concerns or responded with hostility.

“We have experienced increased scrutiny, increased workload, policy changes to prevent us from taking collective action, attempts to divide workers, and illegal and unfair labor practices,” the employees wrote in an Instagram post outlining their grievances.

Holy Donut leadership described feeling “blindsided” by the unionization request. They stated they’ve been working to gather information about the situation but warned that unionization would “fundamentally change how we work together.” The company took particular issue with the approach taken by pro-union employees.

“While we respect the views of the minority working to organize a union at the store and their right to express these views, we strongly disagree with the allegations they have made and the adversarial and confrontational nature of their approach to date,” the company stated.

Management defended their employment practices by highlighting their compensation package and pointing to sacrifices made during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to ownership, they reduced their own pay and benefits during the height of the pandemic to continue paying employees, while also taking on “several million dollars” in debt to keep the business operational.

This dispute reflects broader trends in the food service industry, where unionization efforts have gained momentum in recent years. Workers across the sector have increasingly sought collective bargaining power to address concerns about wages, working conditions, and job security. The pandemic exacerbated many pre-existing tensions in the industry, as food service workers faced new health risks while often being classified as essential workers.

The Holy Donut, known for its Maine potato-based donuts, has grown from a small local business to a regional brand with multiple locations. The company has built its reputation not only on its unique product but also on its community-focused image, making this public labor dispute particularly challenging for its brand identity.

The next steps will likely involve formal proceedings with the National Labor Relations Board if workers continue pursuing unionization. For a union to form, workers would need to secure a majority vote in favor of representation.

The situation highlights the complex power dynamics in small to mid-sized food businesses, where owners often emphasize tight financial margins while workers push for improved conditions. As the dispute continues, both sides will likely seek community support for their positions in a city known for its vibrant food scene and progressive politics.

Neither side has indicated a willingness to back down, suggesting this conflict may continue to develop in the coming weeks as Portland’s food service community watches closely.
