Dentist Claims Termination After Reporting Medicaid Fraud

A former dental professional has launched legal action against multiple dental practices across West Michigan and their management company, alleging wrongful termination after she reported alleged Medicaid fraud, according to court documents filed earlier this week.

The whistleblower lawsuit, initiated by the unnamed dentist, claims she was dismissed from her position after raising concerns about what she describes as systematic improper billing practices. According to the plaintiff, the dental clinics were routinely charging Medicaid for procedures that were either unnecessary or never performed on patients.

The legal complaint targets several dental practices throughout West Michigan, alongside their shared dental management company that reportedly oversees administrative and billing operations for the clinics. While specific practice names remain sealed in initial court filings, sources familiar with the case indicate they include facilities serving low-income communities where Medicaid patients constitute a significant portion of the clientele.

Healthcare fraud involving Medicaid—the joint federal-state program providing medical coverage for lower-income Americans—has been an increasing focus of government enforcement actions in recent years. The Department of Health and Human Services reported recovering over $5 billion from healthcare fraud investigations nationwide last year, with dental fraud representing a growing segment of these cases.

Michigan’s Medicaid dental program, which provides coverage to approximately 2.7 million residents, has been particularly vulnerable to alleged abuse. State officials implemented enhanced verification procedures in 2024 following several high-profile fraud cases, though critics argue these measures haven’t sufficiently addressed systemic problems.

According to the plaintiff’s attorney, Sarah Lancaster, the dentist repeatedly raised concerns through internal channels before facing retaliatory action. “Our client observed a pattern of billing irregularities that clearly violated both Medicaid regulations and professional ethics,” Lancaster said in a statement. “After attempting to address these issues internally, she was marginalized and ultimately terminated.”
