Cantonment Resident Accused of Falsely Reporting Knife Attack at Liquor Store

A Cantonment man faces criminal charges after authorities say security footage contradicted his report about being threatened with a knife during an altercation at a local liquor store.

Kenneth Scott Miller, 48, was arrested and charged with making a false report to law enforcement, a felony offense in Florida. He was subsequently released from the Escambia County Jail after posting a $500 bond.

According to an arrest report filed by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on January 20 when Miller contacted authorities claiming that a man had held a pocket knife to his throat and threatened him outside The Liquor Cabinet, located at the intersection of Highway 29 and Old Chemstrand Road.

Deputies who responded to the initial report noted inconsistencies in Miller’s account of the events. Despite being warned about potential legal consequences for filing a false police report, Miller allegedly maintained his version of the incident and provided sworn statements to investigators.

The case took a turn when investigators reviewed security footage from the business. The video evidence reportedly contradicted Miller’s claims and instead showed him as “the primary aggressor” in the confrontation, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The surveillance footage allegedly captured Miller approaching another person’s vehicle multiple times in an aggressive manner. While the other individual did possess and display a knife, the video showed that he kept it either at his side or chest height in what appeared to be a defensive posture, investigators said. At no point did the footage show the knife being placed against Miller’s neck as he had claimed in his report.

False reporting cases have become increasingly challenging for law enforcement agencies as they divert resources from legitimate investigations. According to national statistics from the FBI, approximately 5-8% of reported crimes contain significant fabrications or misrepresentations of facts.

In Florida, making a false report of a crime is classified as a first-degree misdemeanor in most cases, carrying potential penalties of up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. However, when the false report involves alleged felony offenses, as in Miller’s case, the charge can be elevated to a third-degree felony, which carries more severe penalties including up to five years in prison.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized the importance of truthful reporting in public safety matters. False reports not only waste valuable law enforcement resources but can also potentially endanger innocent individuals who may become subjects of unwarranted investigation.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions at retail establishments across the region. Store owners in Escambia County have reported an increase in confrontational behavior, with local business associations attributing the trend to various factors including economic pressures and pandemic-related stresses.

The Liquor Cabinet, where the incident took place, is one of several independently owned liquor stores operating along the Highway 29 corridor, an important commercial thoroughfare that connects Pensacola to northern communities in Escambia County.
