Political Tensions Escalate as BJP Spokesperson Criticizes Congress Leader Over Allegations Against Assam CM

Political friction between India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress intensified as BJP state spokesperson NV Subhash launched a pointed critique of Congress leader Pawan Khera over accusations made against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family.

In statements to ANI, Subhash questioned Khera’s decision to relocate from Delhi to Hyderabad after receiving a one-week interim transit bail from the Telangana High Court in a case filed against him.

“If you are so clear about the allegations which you have made on the Assam CM and his family members, who have nothing to do with politics or with any business activities, why flee Delhi?” Subhash asked. He suggested Khera’s actions were an attempt to “create a false impression among the people of Assam” while diverting attention from internal Congress party issues and “covering failures.”

The controversy stems from allegations concerning passport and property disclosures related to the Chief Minister’s family. Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of the Chief Minister, filed the case against Khera that prompted the legal proceedings. The Sarma family has categorically denied claims that they possess multiple passports or property in Dubai, dismissing the purported evidence as “AI-generated fabrications” allegedly circulated by Pakistani social media accounts.

The Telangana High Court’s decision to grant Khera interim transit bail for only one week has further complicated the situation. Subhash emphasized that the jurisdiction for the case remains in Assam, and the court has directed Khera to appear there to present his arguments and case details.

Chief Minister Sarma responded forcefully to the accusations, suggesting that Khera should have verified information with the Foreign Minister before making public allegations. In particularly strong language, Sarma referenced Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, saying he “has aged, yet he speaks like a madman.”

The Chief Minister’s comments reflected the growing hostility between the two parties in Assam, a strategically important northeastern state where BJP has consolidated power in recent years. “Assam Police can find and bring people from ‘pataal’ [the underworld] as well,” Sarma declared, implying that Khera would not evade legal consequences.

In a significant escalation, Sarma suggested Congress leader Rahul Gandhi might be connected to the controversy. “I suspect Rahul Gandhi has given him these documents. So this case will extend to Rahul Gandhi,” he stated, broadening the scope of the conflict to include the de facto leader of the opposition party.

The Chief Minister also claimed that Khera “ran away” to Hyderabad following police searches at his Delhi residence, adding that “the law will take its own course.”

This dispute highlights the increasingly contentious political landscape in India as parties position themselves ahead of various state elections. For Assam, which has faced complex challenges related to immigration, citizenship, and ethnic relations, such high-profile political conflicts can further polarize public opinion.

The case also underscores the growing use of legal mechanisms in political disputes, with police actions and court proceedings becoming increasingly common tools in inter-party conflicts. As the legal process unfolds in Assam, political observers note that the outcome could have implications not just for the individuals involved, but for broader party dynamics between the BJP and Congress at both state and national levels.
