Social media influencers are spreading “overwhelmingly” misleading information about medical tests to hundreds of millions of followers, according to a comprehensive new study published in JAMA Network Open.

The University of Sydney-led global research team analyzed nearly 1,000 posts on Instagram and TikTok promoting five controversial medical screening tests. Their findings reveal a troubling landscape where health misinformation flourishes unchecked, potentially placing millions of social media users at risk.

Researchers found that most posts failed to reference scientific evidence, were explicitly promotional in nature, disclosed clear financial interests, and critically, omitted any mention of potential risks or harms associated with the tests.

“The vast majority of these posts were overwhelmingly misleading,” explained Dr. Brooke Nickel, the study’s lead researcher from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health’s School of Public Health. “They are being promoted under the guise of early screening, as a way to take control of your own health.”

The research focused on five specific tests with questionable benefits for healthy individuals: full-body MRI scans, genetic tests claiming to identify early signs of 50 different cancers, testosterone blood tests, anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) tests that measure a woman’s egg count, and gut microbiome tests.

Medical experts have raised concerns about these particular tests, noting they have limited evidence supporting their benefits for generally healthy people and may lead to overdiagnosis and unnecessary medical intervention.

Perhaps most concerning was the study’s finding that 85 percent of the analyzed posts made no mention whatsoever of potential downsides or risks associated with the tests being promoted.

“These tests carry the potential for healthy people to receive unnecessary diagnoses, which could lead to unnecessary medical treatments or impact mental health,” Dr. Nickel warned.

The research highlights the growing influence of social media personalities in healthcare decision-making. With the analyzed posts potentially reaching an audience of nearly 200 million followers, the scale of medical misinformation is substantial.

This trend comes amid rising concerns about the commercialization of healthcare and the blurring lines between medical advice and marketing. Many influencers present themselves as health advocates while simultaneously having financial arrangements with testing companies or clinics that provide these services.

The study’s findings raise important questions about regulatory oversight of health claims on social media platforms. Unlike traditional advertising in healthcare, which often faces strict regulations, social media content exists in a relatively unregulated space where medical claims can be made with little scrutiny.

Public health experts have increasingly called for greater transparency requirements for influencers discussing medical tests and treatments, including mandatory disclosure of scientific evidence, potential risks, and financial relationships with testing companies.

This research also underscores the changing dynamics of how consumers access health information. While previous generations might have relied primarily on healthcare providers for medical guidance, social media now serves as a significant source of health information, particularly among younger demographics.
