A deepfake video circulating on social media falsely shows Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressing support for joint Israeli-American military strikes against Iran, an investigation by Vishvas News has confirmed.
The manipulated video depicts Singh purportedly stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Israel before the conflict began to convey India’s support and warn Tehran about consequences for disturbing regional peace. Facebook user ‘Sheikh Sadeque Ali’ shared the video on March 2, 2026, with a caption claiming: “Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh is expressing support for Israel’s attack against Iran. It has been very clear that India is in favour of killing Muslims.”
Comprehensive fact-checking revealed the clip to be an AI-generated deepfake created by digitally altering footage from an unrelated event. The original video shows Singh addressing a ‘Sindhi Samaj Sammelan’ in Delhi on November 23, 2025, where he discussed Sindhi culture and Partition-related issues but made no mention of Middle Eastern conflicts.
Through reverse image search, investigators located the authentic footage on Singh’s official YouTube channel. Major news outlets including The Indian Express and Hindustan Times had covered this cultural event at the time, confirming the context was entirely unrelated to foreign policy or military operations in the Middle East.
Technical examination of the manipulated clip revealed significant lip-synchronization discrepancies, a common indicator of synthetic media. Three separate AI detection tools further confirmed the deception. The Hive Moderation tool classified the video as 99% AI-generated, while AuRigin AI tool and Truth Scan’s audio analysis confirmed that Singh’s voice had been artificially cloned.
“There is a clear difference between the lip-sync and the words being spoken in the video. The voice does not have the natural fluctuations that occur in real speech. This is a classic example of a deepfake,” said Azahar Machwe, an AI and emerging technology expert who analyzed the video at Vishvas News’ request.
This case highlights the growing sophistication of AI-generated deepfakes in the political sphere. Such manipulated media can spread rapidly on social platforms, potentially inflaming diplomatic tensions and misleading public perception on sensitive geopolitical issues like the Middle East conflict.
The incident comes amid heightened global tensions related to the Israel-Iran situation, where misattributed statements from high-ranking officials could have serious diplomatic implications. India has historically maintained balanced relations in the Middle East, making such a definitive statement particularly problematic if believed to be authentic.
Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid proliferation of synthetic media. The Facebook account that shared this particular deepfake has approximately 11,000 followers, demonstrating how even accounts with moderate reach can effectively distribute misleading content.
As AI technology becomes increasingly accessible, the challenge of distinguishing between authentic and fabricated content grows more complex for media consumers, highlighting the importance of digital literacy and professional fact-checking services in combating misinformation.
