A viral video circulating on social media claiming to show a new deployment of US troops to the Middle East has been debunked as misleading. Fact-checkers at iVerify Pakistan have determined that the footage actually depicts a military homecoming ceremony from June 2023 in California.
The footage began spreading widely on Wednesday as regional tensions between the United States and Iran remained heightened. Several X (formerly Twitter) users shared the video, falsely presenting it as evidence of an ongoing American military buildup in the Middle East.
One particularly viral post, which garnered nearly half a million views, claimed: “Breaking: According to Reuters, the US has more than 50,000 troops deployed in the Middle East, within the area of responsibility of Central Command (CENTCOM), and this number is still increasing. According to officials, the process of transferring thousands of Marines from San Diego to the region is currently ongoing.”
A pro-Iranian account amplified the narrative, adding urgency to the false claim by describing it as a “massive US military deployment” with “thousands of Marines being rapidly transported from San Diego directly to the region.”
Investigators at iVerify Pakistan, a joint fact-checking initiative of the Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), conducted a reverse image search to verify the footage. Their investigation led to the original source of the video on the US Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) official website.
The footage was posted on June 6, 2023, under the title “B-Roll: VMM-362 (Reinforced) Deployment Homecoming.” According to the official description, the video shows US Marine Corps aircraft with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 362 (Reinforced), Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Air Wing conducting a flyover at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.
Further verification revealed that the same video was uploaded to YouTube on June 15, 2023, with an identical title, confirming that the footage was at least a year old and unrelated to current military movements.
The fact-checkers also conducted keyword searches to determine if Reuters or any other mainstream news organization had reported on the specific troop deployments mentioned in the viral posts. No corroborating reports from credible news sources were found, further undermining the claims made in the social media posts.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation during times of geopolitical tension, particularly involving the Middle East. False or misleading content can spread rapidly on social media platforms, potentially inflaming tensions and creating public confusion about military movements and international relations.
The circulation of this misleading video comes at a sensitive time in US-Iran relations, following months of escalating tensions in the region related to conflicts in Gaza and ongoing concerns about Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence.
Military experts note that while the US does maintain a significant presence in the Middle East through CENTCOM, any major troop deployment would typically be reported by multiple credible news sources and officially announced by the Department of Defense.
Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of misinformation, particularly content related to conflicts and military activities. This case demonstrates the importance of verification and fact-checking before sharing potentially sensitive content about international security matters.
