In a significant development that underscores the growing problem of misinformation on social media, a viral video purportedly showing a brave schoolgirl confronting her father’s harassers at a petrol station has been exposed as a scripted performance.
According to a fact-check conducted by iVerify Pakistan, a joint initiative of the Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (CEJ-IBA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the widely circulated footage was deliberately staged for entertainment purposes.
The video, which began circulating across multiple social media platforms on April 10, 2026, depicted a young girl in school uniform retrieving a firearm from her father’s car before confronting a group of men who were allegedly harassing her father at a fuel station.
The clip gained remarkable traction online, amassing hundreds of thousands of views across various platforms. On X (formerly Twitter), one social media influencer shared the footage with the caption “Who says a daughter is a burden? A daughter is a blessing,” garnering over 13,200 views.
Another X user posted the same video with the caption “Brave Daughter. A father’s arm — girls can be strong too, not just boys,” which received an impressive 369,900 views. A self-described journalist also uploaded the clip, collecting an additional 86,600 views.
The fact-check report noted that numerous reposts on X alone generated approximately 321,497 additional views, while uploads to YouTube and TikTok contributed another 150,000 views combined. This level of engagement highlights the video’s viral nature and explains why it caught the attention of fact-checkers.
Investigators at iVerify Pakistan initiated their examination due to the video’s widespread circulation and significant public interest. Their methodology was thorough and systematic, beginning with keyword searches across credible national and international media outlets, which yielded no corroborating reports of such an incident.
The breakthrough came when researchers employed reverse image search technology to trace the footage to its source. This led them to a YouTube Shorts video uploaded on April 9, 2026 – one day before the clip went viral. The video was posted by a channel that regularly produces staged, CCTV-style content for entertainment purposes.
The original YouTube Short carried the dramatic title: “The video went viral when a daughter saw her father being insulted and chased away the opponent after pulling a pistol from the car.” Tellingly, the channel’s self-description indicated that it specialized in “educational and entertaining” content, a common euphemism used by creators of scripted scenarios presented as real events.
Further evidence of the video’s fabricated nature emerged when investigators noticed that the same vehicle featured in the viral clip appeared in several other videos published by the same channel, establishing a pattern of staged productions using consistent props.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge social media platforms face in combating misinformation. Content that triggers emotional responses – particularly involving themes of protection, family honor, and female empowerment – can spread rapidly before fact-checkers have an opportunity to verify its authenticity.
The case also demonstrates the sophistication of modern misinformation, where creators deliberately employ realistic aesthetics, such as CCTV-style footage, to lend credibility to fictional scenarios. Such content can be particularly difficult for average users to identify as fake without specialized knowledge or verification tools.
Based on their comprehensive investigation, iVerify Pakistan assigned the claim a “false” rating, confirming that the footage was created purely for entertainment and did not document an authentic incident as widely believed by viewers who shared it across social media platforms.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of media literacy and critical consumption of viral content, especially when it depicts dramatic or emotionally charged scenarios that align with popular narratives.
