In a digital landscape rife with misinformation, a viral rumor claiming the death of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s son has been debunked by fact-checkers. The false claim spread rapidly across social media platforms amid heightened tensions between U.S.-Israel and Iran.

The misleading posts featured a photograph of Smotrich with his son alongside an emotional video showing an Israeli family in mourning. In the footage, grieving family members holding an Israeli flag can be seen singing through tears—imagery that proved powerful enough to convince many viewers of its purported connection to the finance minister’s family.

Investigation by India Today’s Fact Check team revealed the video actually dates back to July 2023, completely unrelated to current Middle East hostilities. Through reverse image searches of key frames from the footage, researchers traced the video to social media posts from nearly three years ago.

The original video documented the mourning of the Noll family, who were grieving the loss of their son, Sergeant Moshe Shmuel Noll. The 21-year-old Israeli soldier was killed during a military operation in Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. His funeral procession in Jerusalem was led by his father, 81-year-old Rabbi David Noll.

Hebrew language searches confirmed these details through Israeli news reports published around July 10, 2023. Extended footage from the same event shows the Noll family leaving their residence dressed identically to what appears in the viral clip, further confirming the video’s origin.

While the claim about Smotrich’s son’s death is false, there is a kernel of truth that likely contributed to the rumor’s spread. Minister Smotrich did confirm earlier this year that his son, who serves in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), was injured during a Hezbollah rocket attack near the Lebanese border.

According to reporting from The Times of Israel on March 6, the minister’s office acknowledged that Smotrich’s son was among eight IDF soldiers wounded in the attack. The young man reportedly suffered shrapnel injuries to his liver but was described as “lightly injured” compared to five others who were severely wounded in the same incident. The troops were serving with the Givati Brigade when the attack occurred.

The spread of this misinformation highlights the volatile information environment surrounding the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. As tensions between Israel, its allies, and regional adversaries continue to escalate, the digital landscape has become increasingly flooded with unverified claims and misleading content.

This pattern of misinformation is particularly concerning given the real human toll of the conflict. Legitimate casualties on all sides risk being obscured or exploited when false information circulates unchecked. The ease with which old footage can be repurposed to support current narratives demonstrates the challenges faced by news consumers in discerning truth from fiction during rapidly evolving crises.

Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of such misinformation, particularly content that plays on emotional reactions during times of conflict. The Smotrich rumor gained traction partly because it merged an element of truth—his son’s actual injury—with unrelated emotional footage, creating a compelling but false narrative.

As of publication, no credible news sources have reported the death of Minister Smotrich’s son, and fact-checkers continue to flag the claim as misinformation.
