Russian authorities reported that a massive fire broke out at a shopping center in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don early Tuesday morning, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more.
The blaze, which began around 6:30 a.m. local time, quickly engulfed the three-story Stroypark shopping complex, which houses numerous home improvement and construction material stores. According to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, the fire spread to cover nearly 10,000 square meters (108,000 square feet).
“The fire spread rapidly due to the presence of highly flammable construction materials and paints stored inside the building,” said Alexander Kuznetsov, head of the regional emergency services. “Many of the victims were store employees who had arrived early to prepare for the day’s business.”
Rescue operations continued throughout the day as firefighters battled the intense flames. More than 240 emergency workers and 50 vehicles were deployed to the scene, with additional support from nearby municipalities.
Witnesses described hearing several explosions before seeing thick black smoke billowing from the building. “I was just arriving to open my shop when I heard a loud boom, and then another. People started running out in panic,” said Mikhail Sorokin, who operates a small business in an adjacent building.
Regional Governor Vasily Golubev declared a state of emergency and announced that families of the deceased would receive compensation of 1 million rubles (approximately $10,000), while those injured would receive varying amounts based on the severity of their injuries.
“This is a terrible tragedy for our city,” Golubev said during a visit to the site. “We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause and ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a criminal probe into possible safety violations. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical malfunction in one of the stores.
