Recent footage of an assault in a restaurant, which has been circulating widely on social media, has been misrepresented with fabricated claims intended to stoke communal tensions, an India Today investigation has found.
The video shows a man attacking a woman before bystanders intervene and physically confront him. Accompanying the viral clip are captions falsely claiming the incident involves a Muslim man who “brainwashed” a Hindu woman and assaulted her when she refused to accompany him to a hotel. Some posts alleged that when police arrived, the woman defended her attacker and asked authorities to instead take action against those who intervened.
These narratives have been crafted to support baseless “love jihad” conspiracy theories, which allege Muslim men target Hindu women for conversion through romantic relationships. Comments on the shared video further blamed the victim, suggesting she deserved the assault.
However, fact-checkers at India Today have confirmed the incident actually occurred in Brazil in 2021, and has no connection to India or religious dynamics being portrayed in the misleading social media posts.
The investigation traced the footage to its original source through reverse image searches, which led to Instagram posts from October 2021 mentioning Santa Helena de Goiás, Brazil, as the location. Brazilian news outlet More Goiás published reports featuring screenshots from the video, confirming the incident took place on October 9, 2021.
According to reporting by Metrópoles, another Brazilian news organization, the man in the video was the woman’s ex-boyfriend. The couple had ended their relationship just one day before the filmed confrontation, following what was described as an eight-month relationship characterized by frequent abuse.
Detective Thiago Latorre, who investigated the case, told Metrópoles that the victim was sitting with friends at a bar when the incident occurred. She reportedly only became aware of her ex-boyfriend’s presence when he approached her table and began verbally abusing her before the situation escalated to physical violence.
The mischaracterization of this Brazilian domestic violence incident as religious conflict in India exemplifies a growing trend of decontextualized videos being weaponized to inflame sectarian tensions. Such misinformation can have serious real-world consequences, potentially triggering community hostilities and reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Social media platforms have struggled to contain the spread of such misleading content, which often gains significant traction before fact-checkers can intervene. The incident highlights the importance of critical media literacy and verification before sharing potentially inflammatory content.
Domestic violence remains a serious issue in both Brazil and India. In Brazil, government statistics show that femicide rates have risen in recent years, with many cases stemming from domestic abuse situations similar to what appears in the video. Meanwhile, India continues to grapple with both gender-based violence and communal tensions, making false narratives like those attached to this video particularly dangerous.
Law enforcement officials in both countries regularly urge the public to verify information before sharing potentially misleading content that could exacerbate social tensions or revictimize survivors of violence.
