A disturbing video circulating across social media platforms has sparked outrage and an official investigation after showing what appears to be controversial internet personality Braden Peters, known online as “Clavicular,” shooting at an alligator in Florida’s Everglades.

The footage, which has garnered millions of views since being shared on Thursday, shows four men on an airboat in the protected wetlands. Two individuals can be seen firing multiple rounds from handguns at what appears to be an alligator in the water. “Hey, I think it’s dead,” one man can be heard saying in the video, followed by another voice confirming, “Yeah, it’s definitely dead.”

Peters, 20, has built his online following through what he calls “looksmaxxing” content—videos focused on physical appearance enhancement and self-improvement routines. The streamer is no stranger to controversy, having previously broadcast alarming content including an incident last December when he appeared to run someone over with his Cybertruck during a live stream.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed to Newsweek that they are actively investigating the incident. “The FWC is aware of a video depicting individuals in the Everglades on an airboat who appear to be discharging firearms at an alligator,” a spokesperson stated. “FWC officers are continuing to look into the incident and will provide additional information when available.”

This investigation is particularly significant as American alligators are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. While alligator populations have recovered sufficiently to allow limited, regulated hunting in some areas, randomly shooting these reptiles is strictly prohibited and carries serious penalties.

In a separate but concurrent development, Peters was arrested Thursday night on an unrelated misdemeanor battery warrant. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department confirmed his arrest at approximately 8:30 p.m. after being contacted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release from Osceola County officials, the battery charge stems from a February incident at a Kissimmee Airbnb rented by Peters. Authorities allege Peters instigated a physical altercation between a 19-year-old woman and another individual, Violet Marie Lentz, and then posted footage of the fight on social media “to exploit the two women.”

“The victim was battered by Violet Lentz in a physical altercation. Detectives determined that Braden Peters instigated the fight and posted it on social media,” the sheriff’s office stated. Lentz currently has an active warrant for battery but has not yet been arrested.

Wildlife conservation experts have expressed concern over the apparent shooting incident, noting the ecological importance of alligators to the Everglades ecosystem. As apex predators, alligators help maintain population balance among other species and contribute to the region’s biodiversity.

Social media platforms are currently evaluating whether the alligator shooting video violates their content policies regarding animal cruelty. Many platforms have explicit rules against content depicting harm to animals.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges with social media personalities pushing boundaries for views and engagement. Content creators with large followings have faced increasing scrutiny for broadcasting potentially illegal activities to their audiences, raising questions about the responsibilities of both platforms and content creators.

Peters faces potential additional charges if the FWC investigation confirms his involvement in illegally shooting the protected alligator. Wildlife violations in Florida can result in significant fines and possible jail time, particularly for cases involving protected species.

The FWC encourages anyone witnessing wildlife violations to contact their Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
