In a recent appearance at Hungary’s Mathias Corvinus Collegium, US Vice President JD Vance made several statements about the Russia-Ukraine war that experts say significantly misrepresent the current reality of the conflict.

During his remarks, Vance claimed substantial progress in peace negotiations, stating that both sides have presented written positions that are “getting closer and closer together.” He also praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as being particularly helpful in the peace process, saying Orbán has encouraged understanding from both Ukrainian and Russian perspectives.

Perhaps most controversially, Vance characterized the territorial dispute as “bargaining over a few square kilometers of territory,” questioning whether continued fighting was worth “hundreds of thousands of additional Russian and Ukrainian young men” and the economic consequences.

These statements stand in stark contrast to the actual situation on the ground. The territorial dispute encompasses approximately 135,845 square kilometers – roughly the size of England or Greece – including Ukraine’s Luhansk, Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea regions. This represents about 15 percent more land than Vance’s home state of Ohio.

Progress in peace negotiations has been minimal. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has made only two significant concessions: agreeing to a short-term ceasefire and to direct negotiations with Russia while Russian forces still occupy Ukrainian territory. These concessions went into effect in March 2025.

Russia’s demands remain largely unchanged since the war’s beginning. The Kremlin continues to insist on full sovereignty over the disputed regions, permanent Ukrainian neutrality, significant reduction of Ukraine’s military capabilities, and what it terms “de-nazification” of Ukrainian law – effectively removing obstacles to Russian influence in Ukrainian politics, business, and education.

The economic stakes are also immense. The disputed territories contain some of the world’s richest mineral deposits, with estimates placing their potential value above $15 trillion. These resources include coal, lithium, iron ore, natural gas, titanium, and zirconium, with Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions containing approximately 25 percent of global manganese reserves.

Notably absent from Vance’s remarks was any mention of the humanitarian crisis. Approximately 10-11 million Ukrainians – equivalent to 90 percent of Ohio’s population – have been displaced by the conflict, with about 5.3 million internally displaced and 5.7 million forced to flee the country. This represents the largest forced population movement in Europe since World War II.

Ukrainian estimates, generally supported by the UN, put direct physical damage at approximately $195 billion, with total economic losses approaching $600 billion.

Vance’s characterization of Viktor Orbán as an honest broker has also raised eyebrows among international observers. Since 2010, the Hungarian government has consistently aligned with Russian interests by blocking or delaying EU financial aid to Ukraine, opposing sanctions against Russia, refusing transit of military aid through Hungarian territory, and deploying state media to amplify Russian narratives about the conflict.

This latest appearance continues a pattern for Vance, who famously stated in February 2022, just days before Russia’s full-scale invasion: “I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another.”

As peace negotiations continue in this complex geopolitical crisis, accurate characterization of the conflict’s scale, stakes, and the positions of key players remains essential for informed public discourse and policy development.
