A steady increase in domestic violence cases has been documented in a new special report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, showing domestic relationships now account for more than a quarter of all violent crimes in the United States.

According to the report, “Domestic Relationships and Violent Crimes, 2020–2024,” which analyzes data from the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), the percentage of violent crimes involving domestic relationships has grown from 25.6% in 2020 to 27.5% in 2024. The only plateau occurred during 2022 and 2023, when the figure remained steady at 27.0%.

While the increase isn’t dramatic, it represents a consistent upward trend in crimes involving intimate partners, spouses, former partners, or family members. This pattern raises concerns among law enforcement officials and domestic violence prevention advocates about the persistent nature of such violence despite intervention programs.

Among the various categories of violent crime with domestic connections, aggravated assault stands out prominently. The FBI report indicates that “among violent crime offenses in domestic relationships, aggravated assault (31.0%) had the highest average percent of reported offenses.” This means nearly one-third of all aggravated assaults reported to participating law enforcement agencies involved people in domestic relationships.

By contrast, robbery was much less likely to involve domestic connections, accounting for just 6.5% of such cases. This disparity highlights how different types of violent crime manifest differently within relationship contexts, with assault being particularly prevalent in domestic settings.

The gender breakdown in the data reveals a stark reality about who bears the brunt of domestic violence. According to the FBI’s findings, women comprise 74.5% of victims in domestic-relationship violent crimes. While men can and do experience domestic violence, the overwhelming majority of victims continue to be female.

This pattern aligns with global statistics. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly one in three women worldwide—approximately 840 million women—have experienced intimate partner or sexual violence during their lifetime. The consistency of this pattern across cultures and borders underscores the gendered nature of domestic violence.

High-profile cases that deviate from this pattern, such as that of Kouri Richins, who was accused of killing her husband, often receive outsized media attention precisely because they run counter to the statistical norm. However, such cases should not overshadow the broader statistical reality that women face disproportionate risk in domestic settings.

The FBI report also provides sobering statistics on fatal domestic violence. Between 2020 and 2024, there were 11,466 murder victims in cases involving domestic relationships. During the same five-year period, more than 1.1 million people were victims of other forms of domestic-relationship violent crimes that didn’t result in death.

These numbers challenge the notion that domestic violence represents a minor subcategory of violent crime. Instead, they confirm that it constitutes a significant—and slightly growing—portion of all violent crime in the country.

The trend comes at a time when many domestic violence shelters and support services report being chronically underfunded and overwhelmed. The COVID-19 pandemic initially exacerbated domestic violence situations, with many victims trapped at home with abusers during lockdowns, and the aftereffects continue to challenge response systems.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have increasingly implemented specialized domestic violence units and training programs to better respond to such incidents, recognizing the unique challenges these cases present. However, the slight but steady increase in domestic violence percentages suggests these efforts may need further reinforcement or reevaluation.

As domestic violence continues to account for more than a quarter of all violent crime, the data underscores the critical importance of prevention efforts, victim support services, and continued research into effective intervention strategies.
