In a digital landscape increasingly filled with misinformation, a false claim about ABC News anchor David Muir has been making rounds on social media platforms. Contrary to viral posts, Muir never delivered an on-air tirade against former President Donald Trump where he predicted martial law and the cancellation of midterm elections.
The fabricated story emerged from a clickbait website linked to a Facebook page designed to appear associated with Muir. Upon investigation, the page, called “Clarity Newsline,” displays images resembling the news anchor but has no actual connection to either Muir or ABC News.
According to the page’s transparency report, it lists an address and phone number belonging to a luxury apartment complex under construction in Sherman Oaks, California – not ABC News headquarters or any legitimate media organization.
The viral post claims Muir made dramatic statements during a news broadcast, including: “When streets burn and institutions crack, that’s when dangerous men make their move. Trump doesn’t fear disorder. He needs it.” The fabricated quote continues with Muir allegedly warning about “martial law,” “emergency powers,” and “suspended norms” leading to “no midterms.”
In another supposed exchange, when someone purportedly whispered “That’s extreme,” Muir allegedly fired back: “So is canceling democracy to save yourself from prison. You think a man staring down impeachment and handcuffs is going to play fair?”
None of these statements were ever made by Muir on ABC News or any other platform. The article spreading these claims provides no video evidence, broadcast date, or contextual information that would verify such a significant on-air moment.
Fact-checkers performed multiple searches for key phrases from the alleged outburst, including “Are you blind to what’s coming, or are you just afraid to say it out loud.” These searches yielded no legitimate news reports of any such incident, only duplicate copies of the false claim circulating on various social media accounts.
Additional keyword searches combining “martial law” and “David Muir” produced several fact-checks debunking the claim, further confirming its falsity.
The technical trail of the deception is equally revealing. The URL provided in the Facebook post initially directs to “dravex.biz” before redirecting users to “newsdaily.feji.io” – neither of which are affiliated with established news organizations. This redirect pattern is a common tactic used by clickbait operations to generate traffic and potentially advertising revenue.
This incident highlights a growing trend of impersonation on social media, where pages mimic legitimate news sources or personalities to lend credibility to fabricated content. Such pages often use sophisticated visual elements, including AI-generated or altered images, to create a veneer of authenticity.
Media literacy experts advise viewers to verify claims about public figures by checking official news sources and being wary of social media accounts that lack proper verification or transparent ownership information. When dramatic quotes or incidents involving public figures cannot be found on major news outlets or the figure’s official channels, they likely never occurred.
The spread of this fabricated story about Muir demonstrates how quickly false information can circulate online, particularly when it aligns with existing political narratives or creates compelling, if entirely fictional, drama.
