South Korean President Escalates Diplomatic Tension with Israel Over Social Media Post

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has intensified diplomatic tensions with Israel in a growing dispute over alleged human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories. The confrontation, which began with Lee’s social media comments about a controversial video, has now escalated into a diplomatic row between the two nations.

The dispute ignited when President Lee commented on a widely circulated social media video that allegedly showed Israeli soldiers mistreating a Palestinian. “I need to look into whether this is true, and if so, what measures have been taken,” Lee wrote Friday on the social media platform X.

The video in question appears to show an Israeli soldier using his foot to push a body off a roof in the West Bank. While the social media post described it as showing a “Palestinian kid” being tortured and pushed from a roof, AFP reports indicate the footage may actually be from an incident documented by their news team two years ago, showing what appeared to be an adult man’s body being pushed off a rooftop during Israeli operations in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s foreign ministry responded forcefully, claiming the incident had already been “investigated and addressed” and criticizing President Lee for relying on what they described as a “fake account notorious for spreading anti-Israeli disinformation.”

“President Lee Jae Myung, for some strange reason, chose to dig up a story from 2024 and to cite a fake account that falsely presented it as a current event,” the Israeli ministry stated in its own social media response.

Rather than defusing tensions, President Lee doubled down on Saturday with another pointed comment. “It’s disappointing that you don’t even once reflect on the criticisms from people around the world who are suffering and struggling due to relentless anti-human rights and anti-international law actions,” he wrote, adding, “When I am in pain, others feel that pain just as deeply.”

The incident has put South Korea’s foreign ministry in a difficult position, attempting to mediate the growing diplomatic friction. In a statement aimed at easing tensions, the ministry characterized Lee’s post as a broader commentary on “universal human rights rather than an opinion on any specific issue.” Lee’s original post had drawn parallels between alleged Israeli actions and historical atrocities against both Jews and Koreans.

This diplomatic spat comes at a sensitive time for Middle East relations. Israel continues to face international scrutiny over its military operations in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attacks, with growing concerns about civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions.

South Korea has traditionally maintained a carefully balanced approach to Middle East conflicts, avoiding taking sides while supporting broader international peace efforts. As a key ally of the United States—Israel’s strongest international supporter—South Korea typically aligns with American diplomatic positions in the region while maintaining economic and diplomatic ties with various Middle Eastern nations.

International relations experts note that this public disagreement is unusual for South Korea, which generally exercises caution in commenting on contentious geopolitical issues outside its immediate regional concerns.

The confrontation highlights the growing role social media plays in diplomatic relations, where comments by world leaders can quickly escalate into international incidents, bypassing traditional diplomatic channels and potentially complicating delicate foreign policy positions.

As of Saturday, neither country has indicated any formal diplomatic measures beyond the social media exchanges, though observers will be watching closely to see if the dispute affects bilateral relations or South Korea’s position on other Middle East matters.
