Russian Disinformation Campaigns Target Olympics, French Politics, and Navalny Investigation
Pro-Kremlin outlets have intensified their disinformation efforts across multiple fronts this past week, launching coordinated campaigns that targeted Ukrainian Olympic athletes, French political developments, and international investigations into Alexey Navalny’s death.
Despite Russia’s ban from Olympic competition due to doping scandals and its ongoing war against Ukraine, Russian-backed media outlets shifted focus to smearing Ukrainian athletes participating in the Winter Games in Milan and Cortina. According to BBC Verify, these campaigns portrayed Ukrainian team members as aggressive and unpleasant through sophisticated methods including AI-enhanced content.
The disinformation operation went as far as impersonating legitimate news organizations such as Euronews and AFP. In one particularly concerning development, artificial intelligence was used to mimic the voices of credible public figures who appeared to criticize fabricated Ukrainian misconduct at the Olympics.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported another instance where a fake TV segment disguised as CBC content falsely claimed Ukrainian athletes were isolated from other competitors due to “toxic behavior.” The original footage contained no such commentary about Ukrainian participants.
In France, pro-Kremlin outlets mischaracterized statements by President Emmanuel Macron to falsely suggest he was moving to block virtual private networks (VPNs). One commentator dramatically claimed this signaled the death of the Enlightenment in France and warned of impending “totalitarian and concentration camp systems.”
The reality was quite different. After the French National Assembly passed legislation restricting social media access for children under 15, Macron clarified in an interview that VPNs would not be banned, though he acknowledged they could potentially allow some young users to circumvent age restrictions.
The irony of these accusations is stark given Russia’s own severe internet restrictions. Since November 2017, only VPN services that comply with Kremlin censorship have been permitted in Russia, while popular platforms including WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram remain blocked throughout the country.
Perhaps most troubling was the Kremlin’s attempt to deflect attention from a major international investigation into Alexey Navalny’s death. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova baselessly claimed that findings about Navalny’s poisoning were merely a distraction from the release of the Epstein files.
On February 14, 2026, the governments of the UK, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands issued a joint statement confirming that Navalny had been poisoned with a toxin found in poison dart frogs native to South America. This conclusion came after two laboratories conducted tests on biological samples that Navalny’s family managed to smuggle out of Russia.
There is no evidence connecting the timing of this joint investigation’s findings to the Epstein files release. The statement represented the culmination of cooperative work by five different governments, not an attempt at distraction as Zakharova suggested.
This false narrative is merely the latest in what analysts describe as a “firehose of falsehoods” directed at Navalny and his legacy. Previous disinformation has included claims that U.S. special services or the UK government assassinated Navalny, or that he died after using an mRNA vaccine supposedly supplied by Germany.
These coordinated disinformation campaigns highlight Russia’s ongoing strategy of using multiple, contradictory narratives to create confusion, distract from international scrutiny, and undermine legitimate investigations into its activities both domestically and abroad.
The pattern demonstrates the sophisticated evolution of Russian information warfare techniques, which now regularly incorporate AI technologies and impersonation of legitimate news sources to increase credibility and reach of false narratives across international audiences.
