Republican Congresswoman to Host Russian Delegation in Washington Amid Intelligence-Sharing Controversy

Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna is set to host a delegation of Russian lawmakers in Washington, D.C. this week, sparking controversy as tensions between the U.S. and Russia remain high over Moscow’s reported sharing of intelligence with Iran targeting American troops.

According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reporter Alex Raufoglu, Luna orchestrated the visit for what he described as a “cross-party delegation of Russian State Duma deputies.” Interfax News Agency has reported that the delegation will consist of four or five Russian lawmakers who are expected to meet with “several” officials from the Trump administration, including representatives at the State Department.

The timing of this visit has raised significant concerns, as these Russian lawmakers remain under U.S. sanctions for supporting President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. Adding to the controversy, the delegation’s arrival coincides with recent reports that Russia has been providing critical intelligence to Iran that has enabled attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East.

The Washington Post recently reported that “Russia has passed Iran the locations of U.S. military assets, including warships and aircraft,” intelligence that reportedly helped Iran coordinate drone strikes against American personnel. One such attack in Kuwait resulted in the deaths of six American service members and injured several others.

Just last week, Putin suggested he would cease sharing intelligence with Iran if the United States halted its military aid to Ukraine, effectively using the safety of American troops as leverage in broader geopolitical negotiations.

While the specific agenda for the Russian delegation’s Washington visit remains unannounced, speculation abounds that discussions may involve negotiations regarding Iran or Ukraine. In early January, Luna claimed she had received authorization to organize “peace talks” with four members of the Russian Duma. Previously, in September, she stated she was working to arrange a meeting with Russian officials to discuss UFOs.

Luna’s relationship with Russian officials has drawn scrutiny from national security experts. The Florida congresswoman has established friendly connections with numerous Russian officials and has consistently advocated for positions aligned with Kremlin interests, including vocal opposition to U.S. support for Ukraine in its defensive war against Russian aggression.

Critics have pointed to Luna’s role in what some describe as Russia’s propaganda network targeting American audiences. By distributing narratives that align with Kremlin positions, she provides them with the legitimacy that comes from her position as a member of Congress.

In December, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Alexander Darchiev, was photographed with Luna at her Christmas reception on Capitol Hill. The Russian Embassy later shared the image on Facebook with the caption: “Continue working to make Russian-American relations great again!”

The delegation’s visit occurs at a particularly sensitive moment in U.S.-Russia relations, with ongoing concerns about Russian interference in American elections, continued hostilities in Ukraine, and now direct evidence suggesting Russia’s complicity in attacks on U.S. military personnel in the Middle East.

Foreign policy analysts note that hosting sanctioned Russian officials sends a potentially confusing message about U.S. diplomatic positions at a time when clarity is essential. The meetings come as the United States continues to balance support for Ukraine while attempting to prevent further escalation with nuclear-armed Russia.

As the Russian delegation arrives in Washington, many in Congress and the foreign policy establishment will be watching closely to see what emerges from these controversial talks and whether they signal any shift in the complex relationship between the two global powers.
